7.5 Emc Installs, But Little Else Works

lcarson42

Question

I've installed Easy Media Creator 7.5 on my home computer, and the home windown opens perfectly. However, few if any of the programs seem to work. In paraticular, the "Convert LPs and Tapes to CDs" program seems to open (the window appears) and the Recording Setup buttom produces another window that explains how to connect the audio components. But when I click on Record Tracks, the entire "Convert . . ." program disappears in cyberspace

A couple of other programs I tried similarly disappeared as soon as I tried to use them, although the Copy Audio CD program seemed to operate OK.

I've been in touch with tech support, but their suggestions haven't helped. A version on disk thay sent me (originally I'd downloaded) didn't solve the problem. (Note that the original downloaded version DID work on my office computer (a Dell Optiplex running XP Professional--where I've since removed it; I need it at home where my audio equipment is.) I tried all of tech support's 4 "fixes" but none helped. I've tried using msconfig and Task Manager to keep background programs from loading, but was not able to gain complete control of the background programs; those I did keep from loading, using Task Manager, were not the problem.

My home computer is a Dell Dimension XPS R400, running Win 2000, Service Pack 4. I use Norton anti-virus and Zone Alarm firewall software.

Does anyone have any further suggestions or experience with this type of installation problem?

Robert

Since you already have talked to Tech Support I would continue to work through this with them.

Hi Neil & Robert,

Were you able to fix this problem. I"m having the same issue. When I go to click on the Record Tracks buttom it simply disappears. I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program and nothing changed.

I'll try your last suggestion Neil.

I've been working with Tech Support for several days now and am not confident they will be of help. After I wait 15 minutes or so to connect to Tech Support, they get rid of me as quickly as possible by sending me an e-mail with suggested steps. The suggested steps have had errors in methods (e.g., there is no msconfig in Win 2000, and when I downloaded it from the internet, the menu options did not match the e-mailed instructions from Roxio.) Each false start wastes much time. But I guess they are my only hope? No help here???

Hi Robert, i know this is a stupid question, have you done a full un-install and then rebooted ?

I'm going to assume you have, try this for me...

1. download an app called roxioZap and use that to remove the install, then reboot

( may need to manually go into the file manager and go under program files and delete the Roxio folder there)

2. Run a freeware registry cleaner like CleanMyPC Registry Cleaner

then reboot and make sure you have all the Windows XP service packs installed and stop all your anti virus program's, and any other packet writing program's you may have installed.

then try the install again.

Let us know how it go's?

Thanks for your response, Neil. I've already downloaded the utilities you mentioned, and I'll consider trying them later today.

However, four questions arise:

1. I have Win 2000, Service Pack 4, on my home computer, not XP. Will these utilities work for that Operating System?

2. You mentioned "any other packet writing programs." I'm afraid I don't know what packet writing programs are. What are they? Anyway, if they are programs that boot upon startup and run in the background, I probably did not have them running during the reinstall (see my use of "msconfig" below).

3. I'm beginning to wonder if Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5 will work on a Win 2000 machine at all.

3a. My home computer was purchased with Win 98, and I later upgraded to Win 2000. (The file system is now NTWS, not FAT32.) Could that history from Windows 98 be the problem? (Maybe I should ask Roxio for an earlier version of EMC?)

Also, since posting my previous message I did contact Tech Support again and found a very helpful person there. He advised me on uninstalling everything, rebooting without booting background programs (using msconfig), and installing again. To install again he suggested copying the EMC 7.5 CD to my hard drive and to install from that copy. I did this last evening, again without getting Roxio's "LPs and Tapes to CDs" to work.

So my fourth question is:

4. Do you really think another uninstall and reinstall will help, taking into account this further information I've outlined above?

Thanks.

Robert

Hi Robert,

Firstly , to answer your question 1, yes roxiozap and registry cleaners work well on windows 2k and xp, so i don't see an issue there.

Second Question, when i say packet writing software , i mean any other old versions of Easy CD or Nero or any other products that have items like drag to disk icons on the task bars or on the desktop, that sort of products, the reason i say that is because you can only run one of them at a time, and if there was one already, it would have been a stopping point for the install.

3rd question, i don't think the history of your system having been an upgrade to windows 2000 should cause a problem with the install, as all the core system files get wiped and replaced so there should be no legacy files there to cause an issue with your install, and as you have said the file systems have also been updated.

As to an earlier version, No, i run 7.5 on two of my work PC's fine on windows 2000 so there is not an issue there.

OK, you have done what i was going to say next, though the support desk, so you also say that the LPs and tapes don't work?, firstly, does easy CD work and open to burn a normal CD?, what do you mean the LPs and Tapes don't work, sorry to ask this but can you define it a bit here for me?, are they grayed out or don't they open? what error messages do you see?

To answer the last question, i really need detailed reply to the question about the LPs above, as there is no point re-installing if the core program is working.... so lets get the above details first.

then we can sort out that last question.

PS: Email me your replies directly if you want, click on my user name and select PM user , and that means the next time i login here ill see a pop-up message that you have replied.

regards
