Fatal Error on Install

Sevestis

Question

I am really hoping someone can lead me in the right direction here...I'm a desperate man. Advanced apologies for issues that have likely been covered. I did some searching around on the forums, but I couldn't find exactly what I'm looking for. I can get around basic things with a computer, but I certainly am pretty much a novice with the registry issues and other similar more advanced problems.

I have a Dell Dimension 8400, running XP and have never had a any problem whatsoever installing any new software. This past weekend, I went to install EMC 9 and midway through up pops the blue screen o' death. Couldn't get Windows to come back up in any way shape or form (safe mode, etc.) so obviously couldn't System Restore. Basically had to break out the XP boot disk and reinstall Windows to get anywhere.

Long story short my PC is still in pretty bad shape: Obviously EMC 9 doesn't work, I can't uninstall (through the Control Panel) the chunk of EMC 9 that's on there, and when I try to install something else the .NET framework installer is suspended and hung up with the EMC 9 install....I can't install anything new. EMC 9 is in the start menu and I have a few Roxio components running upon XP startup; they seem to be bogging things down. Internet Explorer doesn't work except from the Start Menu. Lots of little problems as well.

I don't want to get too long-winded so here are a few pertinent pieces of info. During the install it needed to uninstall Sonic DLA (came with the Dell) so I ok'd that. Of course, I now know that I should have erased that ahead of time, but I had no idea until I went researching after the corruption...I wish I could go back (I set a System Restore point pre-install, but obviously that got wiped). I know Sonic DLA causes problems in Vista, but what about XP?

Basically can anyone advise me where to go from here? I don't want to try to install again without fixing things. Do I need to do something with the registry...any advice there? I just have no idea where to begin now....other than making sure my most important things are firmly backed up.

Again, thank you for any help in advance...I hope someone can at least point me in the right direction.

You need to make sure you follow the clean install instructions before you do anything else. I hope you reformated when you reinstalled XP.

I didn't.

I really didn't want to have lose everything because of Roxio software. So at this point are you saying I have to go back and reinstall XP again, this time reformatting? I really want to avoid reinstalling everything if possible, is that the only way to get things right?

Backup all of your data, and then do a Format C: It is the only way to go.
