In order to make a dvd, the avi needs to be made dvd compliant. This takes time. How much time depends on many things but it's definitely going to take longer the the video itself.

what files are dvd compliant and how do you make them compliant? Because now its starting to seem it wasnt worth buying this and ill probably end up returning it -.-

A dvd compliant disc is made up of vob, ifo and bup files. If you have an dv-avi file, it might encode faster than a divx or xvid avi file. These are compressed files and take longer.

I don't proclaim to know all the ins and outs of the making of a compliant dvd but you're welcome to google it for more info.

You've not posted your computer specs either so it's hard to say whether your computer is up to snuff as well.

Doesn't matter what software you use. It takes time to convert files especially downloaded files which are usually DivX or some other highly compressed format. Conversion is very CPU intensive so how long it takes depends a lot on how fast your CPU is.
