"Best Hits" DVD

nhav8or

Question

I have just completed transferring several old video tapes to dvd. I would like to take portions of the various dvds and make a "Best Hits" dvd. How do I pull out the tracks I want from the various dvds, then compile them into a new project? In other words, can I use several different dvds as video sources to make one dvd? I am using a Macbook Pro and Toast 8.

The easiest way to do what you want would to to get a free ripping program like handbrake: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12987/handbrake

or mediafork: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24032

With these programs you can insert a DVD and select with chapter you wish to rip and the program will rip the selected chapters and create a MP4, AVI or OGM file witch you can then import into toast 8 and burn.

You can extract individual titles or chapters from multiple DVDs using the Media Browser. However, those may not be exactly what you want. To make clips of specific scenes on a DVD I recommend MPEG Streamclip or Miraizon Cinematize. As long as you use them to save as MPEG files there is no need for re-encoding and the process is reasonably quick.

So, I can pull out the scenes I want from a dvd, then put a new dvd into my computer and pull out other scenes and add to the project and so forth until I finish? Then I can edit in Toast or iMovie and then burn?

Yes, if the scenes you want happen to be marked as chapters on the DVD. You can use the Media browser to access the DVD, go to the chapter level (with the lower browser button) and drag the chapters you want to the Video window (with DVD video selected as the format). When you are done adding the chapters, each one is now an individual title to burn to a new DVD.

But if you want clips that aren't exactly the same as the DVD's chapters you need one of the other applications I mentioned that can trim the start and end points you select from the DVD. Then save as MPEG files to drag to Toast.

If you want to use iMovie then you'll have to export the clips either as MPEG 4 or DV video. Toast, MPEG Streamclip and Cinematize can do this conversion.

One thing to note: when extracting clips using Toast's Media Browser the extracted video is written to the Roxio Converted Items folder (in your Documents folder). If you quit Toast that folder gets automatically erased unless you change that action in Toast Preferences.
