Letterbox edges oscillate

edefosse

Question

I just got done converting a DVD video to DivX and a very strange thing happened: the letterbox "bars" vibrate up and down 2-3 times per second with an amplitude of about 1/8 of an inch (as seen on my screen)! In other words, they move up and down over the video itself.

It is extremely annoying and frankly pretty much makes Copy & Convert unuseable for this purpose. I tried to convert to WMV and to H.264 and got the same result.

Converting the same DVD video using DivX Converter resulted in no problems whatsoever.

Could this be a bug in Copy & Convert?

Hi Erin,

Does this only happen with one particular DVD or output setting?

Do the bars appear when you play the output file on another machine?

Is there any way I can duplicate this on my system?

Does changing your screen resolution or refresh rate change the 'bars'?

If I sent you my email address in a private message, could you send me a screenshot showing the bars?

Regards,

Brendon

Brendon,

1) I have only tried it with one DVD but since that same DVD converted fine using the DivX Converter product then I am suspect. IMPORTANT NOTE: I am using Copy & Convert on a Windows Vista machine whereas the DivX Converter app is running on a Windows XP machine because that app is not yet Vista compatible. I could try using Copy & Convert on the same WinXP box and see if doing the conversion there changes things.

2) I got the same results when converting from DVD to DivX, to WMV, and to H.264. I didn't fiddle with the specific output settings for them though.

3) Other than me giving you the source DVD I am not sure how you could replicate it.

4) I have not tried changing the screen resolution. I will do so and let you know.

5) I am happy to send you the screenshot.

BTW, are you a Sonic employee?

Hi Erin,

No I'm not an employee, just an enthusiastic amateur. The company people who come through here have their screen names clearly marked as Roxio or Sonic. I do have Copy and Convert installed here though.

I'm thinking that C+C might be producing an output file which is "beating" with your screen frequency, hence the interference. The fact it happens with all three output formats would rule out a codec problem I think, and point more toward a setting in C+C itself.

This is why I was interested in getting the output displayed under different screen conditions. Since you have two machines there, does the interference show when you play the same output file on each machine?

I've hooked your email address out of your message because full addresses on public forums tend to get 'harvested' by scanning 'bots and end up on mail lists - don't want that, do we. :) I'll email you shortly.

Best regards,

Brendon

Brendon,

Thanks for taking an interest in this. I have not yet been able to test the video file on the other PC but will let you know what I discover when I do.

As for my email address: no need to worry, I used my truly public (as in it gets tons of spam already and is NOT the email address I use for personal use) address. Anyway, I'll look for your email and respond to you shortly.

Thanks again,

-Erin
