Creator Classic can't handle large directories

johnata

Question

When Creator Classic starts up, it displays the files in a directory so that the user can choose files to burn on a CD. I noticed that when I startup or go to a large directory containing 370 files with an average size of 10MB/file (some 40 or 50 MB), that Creator Classic seems to go south with a corrupted screen, menus not displaying properly, fonts in menu incorrect, usually ending with a crash. If I start in a smaller directory such as C:\, then there is no problem and it works perfectly. Has anyone seen this problem?

In your 'test' you said "when it finishes loading"… When I click that directory it displays in less than 1 second!

Another one I tried, with 3500 files, took 6 seconds…

Of course I always have mine set to Details. If you are using Thumbnails and there are graphic files, it will take longer to build the thumbnails. Although in the System32 directory, it only took a hair over 1 second.

Why don't you list out all your PC specs like most of us have in our signature so we can see what is causing your performance problems. You have been focusing on proving it is 'faulty software' and it is time to move in the right direction.

I think even though it seems like it finishes loading, it's still processing files in the background. I usually have to wait about 5 or 10 seconds before I see any failures...

So do I.

I think that's a mischaracterization - clearly it's faulty software somewhere. If no one else seems to be having problems with large directories, then it must be something relatively unique with my setup. Programs should not trap and abort for "performance reasons". I'll post my specs, but I doubt they will shed any light anywhere.

It might have something to do with running NIS 2007.

Actually, I did see something like this at one point... obviously, I was busy and didn't take time to fiddle with it. My workaround at the time was to open Creator Classic and Windows Explorer, and just drag the files I wanted from Windows Explorer into the "burn pane", which let me do what I wanted. I was getting a corrupted file selection pane, and Creator Classic was hanging up and crashing when I tried to navigate around. I'll try to find some time to fiddle around with it some more.

Dave, thanks very much for your reply... I appreciate it and am glad to know that I'm not hallucinating :)

The 6030 version is in system32 which seems to be used by Creator Classic on my machine. The version Roxio uses appears to be version 3077 which is older and is stored in a couple of places, one of which is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared. Clearly dropping the 3077 version in system32 is not the right solution since IE7 and other more modern programs want the later dll. So how to get Creator Classic to load the correct version? If I try to register the 3077 version manually via regsvr32, it tells me that the RegisterSvr entry is missing and cannot be registered. The other 3077 version I have has the same attribute. Heck even the version in System32 gives the same error.

I have XP SP2 all updates, IE 7 all updates, WMP 11 and the version of mfc71u.dll in system32 folder is 3077, same as in the Roxio folders. Nothing on my PC complains about not having a later version of that file

Also, looking at the Microsoft dll site, no Microsoft program appears to have a later version:

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dllt...amp;x=7&y=9

So it is not clear to me what app can have installed it.

More information: the trap or crash seems to always contain the following information:

Faulting application creator9.exe, version 9.0.2.16, faulting module mfc71u.dll, version 7.10.6030.0, fault address 0x00018f03.

I see others have had problems with this - perhaps Creator Classic is loading the wrong mfc71u.dll?

It might have something to do with running NIS 2007.

Sounds possible although I don't know what to do about it if it's the problem. Temporarily turning off Auto-Protect had no effect...

Another interesting piece of information is that if I change my view to Thumbnails, then I have no problem. Both List and Details do have the problem and the only thing in common is the small icons. Maybe I have a bad icon somewhere although I tried the TweakUI "Repair Icon" which seemed to have no effect but again I don't know which icons it repairs....

Entirely possible especially if you have installed another app that also installed a numbered version of the same Microsoft Foundation Class DLL. There is really no way to tell.

Search your hard drive to see how many copies of that file you have and where they are located.

You could try deleting the thumbs.db file in the offending folder (note it's a hidden file so you may have to turn on the option to see those first).

Searching the registry, I found this key that relates to mfc71u.dll

Thanks... already looked at that area of the registry. Creator Classic points to system32. Can you tell me what Creator Classic is pointing to in your registry?

I'm not sure, maybe .Net Framework Version 3? In any case it appears that there are other mfc files that are in version 6030 as well. Interestingly enough Creator9 has consistently loaded the later version in all cases.

I did - on my system, there are just three Roxio versions and one in System32. The Roxio versions are in:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared

C:\Program Files\Roxio\Backup MyPC\System

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\Roxio Central33\Main

The three Roxio versions are identical as version 3077. The one in System32 is version 6030. How to get Creator Classic to load one of the Roxio versions? BTW, process explorer is providing the information that Creator 9 is loading the DLL from System32...

He'll also have to Turn off "Cache Thumbnails" otherwise it, ► "Thumbs.db" will just reappear the next time he goes into that directory.

But isn't Thumbs.db only used in the Thumbnail view? That's the only view that works!

Searching the registry, I found this key that relates to mfc71u.dll

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-18\Components\52AA4CA3A82A90F428A603ACA026F053

It contains the foillowing values:

00000000000000000000000000000000 data : C?\WINDOWS\system32\mfc71u.dll

180086704B9E6FD48A54ACFA0D394E77 data : C?\WINDOWS\system32\mfc71u.dll

6786F822313A3A04190C3CBC6E99D790 data : C?\WINDOWS\system32\mfc71u.dll

28181AB81596108438B14272EBBFD40D data : C?\WINDOWS\system32\mfc71u.dll

0B5EE0CABF8AA0D4FA30E2CD15F848B1 data : C?\WINDOWS\system32\mfc71u.dll

B0860B8CEADC9084F91983B7D60EF0C7 data : C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\Roxio Central33\Main\mfc71u.dll

92B2A8824FE19CB489B66800853744D5 data : C:\Program Files\Roxio\\Backup MyPC\System\mfc71u.dll

E885E958EF96e204D947A952175EC090 data : C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\mfc71u.dll

34CE1E53CF4DA4E4AA3B02DD2AE7B80B data : C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared\mfc71u.dll

The value names correspond to different components on my PC (you may not have the same ones).

For example, B0860B8CEADC9084F91983B7D60EF0C7 refers to Roxio Home component of EMC 9

180086704B9E6FD48A54ACFA0D394E77 refers to Encarta reference library, etc. You will find that info in the corresponding subkeys of

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products

As you see the Roxio related ones point to the mfc71u.dll files in the Roxio folders. Perhaps you could try to see if this key has the same paths for the Roxio components on your system, or if those Roxio components are not pointing to their own mfc71u.dll file, edit the paths (right click on the value, click modify). Export the key first so you can merge to back to what it is now in case that does not work. To merge back the original, double click on the saved .reg file. Or if the Roxio-related values are missing, you could try adding them (although I'm not certain that the value names assigned to the Roxio components are the same on each install).

To open regedit: Click start, run, type regedit, click OK or press enter. In the left pane (tree structure) highlight the top icon (My Computer), THen Edit menu, Find, type mfc71u.dll, make sure Keys, Values, Data are all checked; click find next. That will find the first instance of mfc71u.dll. Click F3 to find the subsequent one.

I just added a folder with 4,500 files, with no problem. It almost sounds like an issue with your video card. I am not sure, but make sure that you have the latest video drivers installed.

You're right in that the number of files itself is not sufficient to cause the problem - I can open it in my Windows directory that has twice the number of files with no problem. My guess is something is overflowing - not sure if it's the size of the files that's causing a problem. How big were the 4.500 files in your folder? So far the problem only occurs in this one directory where I archive large program installation/setup/msi files. When this problem occurs, even attempting a "Help" operation returns a cryptic message about not being able to contact the server on the Internet.

It would be mindboggling that Creator Classic had an issue with the video card while My DVD and other video related programs have no problem with it whatsoever. It sounds much more likely to be a buffer overflow of some kind where adjacent memory has been corrupted. The dump that is produced shows the error in the main program (Creator9.exe) and not referencing a video dll. I am also running a modern driver version.

Video drivers seem to cause a great number of program problems these days. Believe it or not, in days past it was Mouse Drivers!

As GPB suggested, make sure your video drivers are up to date.

They are up to date... and I really am not trying to argue about this... My original post was asking if anyone else had seen this problem... GPB's response was helpful in that the number of files was not causing the problem which I confirmed but I wondered if anyone else had seen the problem I described when using Creator Classic...

Some of the files that I added were in excess of 15MB. Are you running Vista?
