Dvd Builder Video Quality

sheabo35

Question

Since it seems that the quality of the final production depends on the quality of the original capture and the length of the video,I'm wondering why there is such limited choices for production, ie low, medium, good and best? If I'm capturing VHS at 352x480 resolution using a bit rate of between 3MBS and 4MBS, does it make any difference in DVD Builder that the resolution for Best is 720x480 at 9MBS. In other words can a captured resolution of 352x480 actually be improved to 720x480? The closest to my capture that DVD Builder offers is Low at 352x240 at 4MBS which is worst than my original capture.

Am I misunderstanding something? Are capture and DVD resolution and bit rate unrelated?

Thanks

Tim

This is my point exactly. There doesn't seem to be any way to even get the quality of the original capture using DVD Builder.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has captured VHS. How have you coped with this DVD Builder limitation? Is there any way of changing the default burning settings; that is the low, medium, good and best settings? There seems to be a consensus among users that the best capture setting for VHS is 352x480. Should I be capturing VHS at 720x480 at a higher bit rate which will increase the file size?

You should be capturing at the highest settings that you can. The closer that you can get to 720x48 29.97 fps, the better quality you will get. Not everyone has hardware that can capture close to the DVD standards.

Now you'll never get video equal to a digital camcorder because they use more horizontal lines to get the quality and you're converting a true picture to tiny little boxes ( pixels). Still, the quality is pretty good and it's better than watching your tapes fade to black.

So capture at the best quality you can, and keep 'best' quality throughout the DVD burning process to get the best video on your DVD.

My best quality comes from VHS that I convert to digital by running it through my DVD camcorder's signal converter. The file size is huge (13+ Gb for one hour of DV AVI although I capture in 20 minute segments).

Quality can be rendered down but not up!

Generally when you go up it gets very blocky. Not always but often enough to make it a “standard” to capture in quality at or better than final output.
