Someone Please Help Me! Install/uninstall Nightmare!

Question

I am running Windows XP Home SP2 on a Dimension 8400 - 1.6GHz with 1G RAM memory. I was running EMC 7 upgraded to 7.5. Life was good, everything worked like a charm until just the other day, when I noticed that for SOME UNKNOWN REASON, I could no longer burn dvds. I could burn CDs, but NOT dvds. OK, no problem, I thought...I uninstalled the program, and when I attempted to REinstall it, I started getting these wacky messages that have been posted before on this discussion group - "unable to find a certificate file"/"There was a problem authenticating your version- please make sure your system is set to the correct date"/Fatal Error during installation". About every 3rd time I uninstalled the program, it would (I thought) install correctly, but when I tried to open the Roxio HOME button, I got yet ANOTHER error message - "Runtime Error - HOMEPAGEAPP.EXE - Abnormal Program Termination" ...although all the programs were listed, none would open.

I have used the both the MS uninstall program and Roxizap (SP?) programs discussed here and tried re-install, but to no avail...so I tried System Restore - BOY, WAS THAT A MISTAKE. Now, everytime I do a system restore to a previous point, Roxio Installer attempts to install, and the whole thing starts over again.

I used to be able to burn cds with musicmatch and sonic, but NOW, my dvd-rw drive is not recognzed by either program. Thinking this was a hardware issue, I call Dell Tech Support - I find that I can burn to WMP 10 with no problem, so it is not, apparently, a hardware issue.

Can someone tell me what to do, short of a PC Factory Recovery?

I am at a loss as to what to do...

you might want to consider this:

1. Use the windows install clean up utility. If that doesn’t work go to step two

Re-register DAO

a. Close all programs

b. Click Start, Run...

c. Type or copy/paste: regsvr32 /u c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\dao\dao360.dll

d. Click OK. You should get a message that it unregistered. Click OK.

e. Click Start, Run...

f. Type or copy/paste: regsvr32 c:\program files\common files\microsoft shared\dao\dao360.dll

g. Click OK. You should get a message that it registered. Click OK.

h. Restart your system

If the solution above does not work, follow the steps below.

1. Uninstall your Roxio product if it is already installed

a. Close all programs

b. Click Start, Control Panel

c. Click Add/Remove Programs

d. Select the Roxio program from the list and uninstall it

2. MS Office

a. If you have Microsoft Office installed, launch any application (such as MS Word)

b. Click on Help, then click Detect and Repair

c. Click Start

d. Wait for the progress bars to complete

e. Click OK

3. ATI

a. If you have ATI devices installed on your system, go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs

b. Remove any ATI DAO entries

4. Restart your computer

5. Reinstall your Roxio product

You're welcome.

You're welcome.

Jim - just an update to my last:

Right before I attempted to follow your steps, my DVD Writer (A Philips, the THIRD writer replaced by Dell in less than a year) got to the point where it would not open. After two MORE hours with Dell Tech Support, I finally got them to admit that the drive was bad. Needless to say, I told them I would not accept another Philips drive, and they kindly sent, 2 days later, an Hitachi drive. In the meantime, I decided to perform a Symantec PC Restore. After installing the drive, I was able to install EMC 7, perform the update, and then re-install the 7.5 upgrade. Everything works like a charm. Thanx again for taking the time to help me through the problem!

If I would have seen that you had a junk Philips drive, I would have told you to call Dell and tell them that you want an NEC drive. There have been many threads in forums elsewhere, talking about the problems with Dell provided Philips drives and how Dell finally made good on a replacement of a different brand.

The problem drives were usually shipped with Dell computers between October 2004 and July 2005. Some folks have said that the Philips drives, with a manufacturer's date, later than July 2005, worked well. It seems that Philips fixed their problem, but it is still a bottom feeder drive.
