Rlancaster,

If getting a new RW disc doesn't cure your problem, may I suggest you uninstall both ECDC and the Real player, use the Roxizap uninstaller, and then reinstall Easy Cd Creator alone.

If a new RW disc fixes the problem, then don't touch the software

In my case PX-8432-T burns fresh data CDRWs (1-4x) Maxell. Thereafter refuses to recognise and erase. Sometimes the CDRW is recognised as a music file with a single track as described above but this is hardly consistent.

The same CDRW is recognised and erased by DVD writer in brand new Dell machine running WinXP Professional SP2 and Nero.

PX-8432-T recognises audio as well as data CD-Rs and burns them satisfactorily.

ASUS CD-ROM recognises and reads data CDRW (including CDRW burnt by PX-8432-T and CD-Rs, both data and audio.

While recognising that CDRW media can deteriorate, why then does it operate well on DVD burner? Is there is problem with the laser lens in the PX-8432-T?

I am using the following:

Windows 98SE; CDRW Plextor PX-8432-T; CD-ROM ASUS 52x; Adaptec EZCD Ver. 4.02 with firmware 1.7. Windows Media Player 2; DirectCD not installed; Adaptec came bundled with PX-8432.

RW media reflects less light than R media, which in turn reflects less light than commercially pressed media (the 0's and 1's are physically pressed into the metal).

There is a separate laser assembley used for burning than for reading.

It sounds like the PX-8432-T may be on its way out. If it came around the same time as the Win98 SE computer, it has served long and well.

Since the burning and reading assembly are separate, I am not clear why it can both burn and read CD-Rs but not CDRWs: is that explained by the fact that "RW media reflects less light than R media"?

The only reason for continuing with Win98se is the very good sound card - Audiophile 24/96. I seem to have few choices: look for a CDRW compatible with Win98se or check whether the Audiophile 24/96 will permit an upgrade to XP with new drivers. Unfortunately, most manufacturers leave these things unclear. Thanks for the response

You may have problems with ECD4 and a new drive. ECD 4 and 5 use drive tables to access the optical drive and there just won't be any available for newer drive models

Your audiophile 2496 card does have XP drivers - available here

However, you will also have to upgrade from ECD4 - ECD5 MAY work with XP SP2 (no guarantees) but ECD6 onwards will work

Given that everything else can read the CDRW discs, there's nothing wrong with the burning section of your PX-8432.

Since other drives can erase and use the CDRW there's most likely nothing wrong with the disc.

I would suspect there's something wrong with the read optics or the read amplifier in your PX-8432, so that it's failing to get a sufficient signal when it tries to read CDRW discs. A lens cleaner might help, but otherwise it's technician or retirement time for that drive.
