My apologize for not being specific, I have the imac 24" w/superdrive, internal. Could it be that when burning that the cpu is operating at high percentage example burning and surfing the net should not be attempted??

You say this slow speed only happened after installing Toast 8. In that case I suggest trashing Toast 8 and its two plist files in your User>Library>Preferences folder and reinstalling. Also try a different brand of media. Oftentimes slow burning is because a drive's firmware has trouble with the media. Insert a blank DVD and chosse Disc Info from Toast's Recorder menu. You'll see in the window that appears a button to get More information about the disc. This will take you to a site where users report on the usability of that particular media.

Apple's slot-loading Superdrives are not of high quality or high reliability. You might want to get an external DVD drive as they are faster in real-world burning and not just in published specs. That's what I have with my 20" iMac. Still, I get normal burn speeds with its Superdrive, so you should too with good-quality media.

Something is wrong. What brand of media are you using? It may be the drive is having trouble burning to that media so it slowed itself down. Is this an internal, Firewire or USB 2 drive?
