The first thing that I would do is check the original production and see if there were any glitches. If not, I would switch brands or types of media that you are using. What brand are you using?

Some set top DVD players are aweful picky at playing home made movie DVD's. Changing brands of media helps, most times.

I was using Memorex DVD-R, same brand I've always used because it's always worked in all my players. Till now. Today I was going to go back to the slideshow and see if I see anything wrong in it.

I'm contemplating uninstalling EMC 8 and going back to EMC 7.5 as I have never had all these problems with it. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks.

More than likely, it is the Memorex, perhaps the poorest media made. They have many different manufacturers for their media, but the biggest one is a company called CMC Magnetics. They are also the worst company for quality control.

Run DVDInfoPro, which came with the software, and see who the manufacturer is. If it says CMC MAG..., toss that disc in the trash.

I hate those "express type programs" there have been several issues but no real solutions.

Have you tried using the full MyDVD? I assume that you are building the show(s) in VideoWave. Once you save the project(s), close VideoWave and open MyDVD. Choose the style that you want to use and then add the project(s) using the "Add new movie" command. At this point you might want to also set the project settings through the File/Project Settings command.

When you are finshed with this, click the burn button and select the option to burn to an image file (iso); deselect the other two options. When this has completed, navigate to the file and double click it; disc copy should open. Select the destination drive (make sure you are set to copy the entire file (not compilation) and copy. The iso method separates the rendering from the burning and usually gives a better result.

This sounds longer than what it actually is in practice and in the long run, it will save time. Let us know how this works out.

I built a slideshow and when I attempt to burn it to DVD using MyDVD Express I get:

8007000e Error While Encoding Menu

What is this and how do I fix it? :)

I tried so many things yesterday I'm not sure. I think I tried it both ways. (The last attempt of the night I did after closing all open programs including my AV software, as per the other responce.) I believe I closed VideoWave and opened MyDVD and created an ISO file but did not do a burn as it said that I did not have a valid disc in the drive. As it should have been valid and it was getting late I just turned off the Burn option & saved the ISO - to see if it would work. Apparently it did.

So now that I have the ISO how do I get it to a DVD?

If the ISO file was completed, open DVD copier select the Cd/DVD copy tab, and on the left side navigate to where the ISO file is and select it. Now select the destination drive in the right hand side of the window. Select a burn speed slightly less than the max. and click copy. That ISO file is an exact duplicate of what will be on the disc if it burns correctly. In the future, do select create the ISO file only.

If you are getting a notice about an incorrect disc, there may be a problem that can be solved by a firmware update. Go to the manufacturer's web site or your burner manufacturer's web site to download any new firmware. Follow the instructions exactly.

You may also just plain old have a bad set of blank discs. Try another brand and make sure that the burner handles the +R and/or -R discs that you have. Now is a good time to invest in a couple of RW discs to play with until you get the program set up correctly. Check with the burner manufacturer's web site to see what they have tested and work best with that device.

Turn off any packet writing software that you have loaded (e.g. Drag to Disc).

Post back if you are still having burning issues. Perhaps there are other things going on.

Well I created a shorter slide show (150 photos, 10 minute run time) included it in a menu with a video clip, rendered it to an ISO file and burned the ISO (on a Memorex disc) - it works perfectly.

Leads me to wonder if my first problem wasn't size related.

Thanks I'll do that and report back. I suspect that the DVD got corrupted by one of the many failures I had from MyDVD. I'll try a different disc and I imagine that will clear it up as I've never had problems burning from this drive on this brand before. (Of course I was using EMC 7.5 then!)

What is the total length in time of your slideshow? Remember you are actually creating a movie, not a slideshow in the old sense of using a slide projector. There is no "next" or "previous" button you can use to navigate through your slideshow. Since you are creating a movie, at best quality you can only get 60 minutes of a slideshow on a DVD. Showing 740 slides for 5 secs each alone will exceed the 60 minute limit unless you use the ISO file method to create the DVD.

The first one was 50 minutes long.

If you have had some failed burns, you might want to go into Device Manager, and under the IDE and ATAPI Controllers, make sure that your burner(s) are still set to Ultra DMA Mode, and not to PIO mode.

Thanks for letting us know how it went with the shorter slide show. I don't know why the longer one did not work properly. 50 minutes is a bit long, but I still think it should work.

I wouldn't give up on the long one. :) I would do it in increments and burn it to a RW disc, each time. It will take a lot of time to keep building it up to the original length of time, but you may actually get it to work.

Well I got a couple Verbatim DVD-R discs, swept my PC for viruses and spyware, went thru the slide show frame by frame to ensure it was working and then burned my disc again (by having MyDVD create an ISO file and then using Disc Copier to do the burn) slowing the burn speed down from the maximum. But the Verbatim copy performs the same as the Memorex copy, it plays all the audio but the last 50 or so slides just show the black background but no image.

So I downloaded a trial copy of some software that only does slideshows (DVD, VCD, EXE, HTML) and built the same slideshow using exactly the same input, burned it to a Memorex DVD-R and it works flawlessly. I have tried it on numerous player and it works on all of them. (This product was also a lot easier to work with I'm sorry to report. Took half the time to build and burn using it as compared to Roxio.)

So my conclusion is that MyDVD has a problem with the size of my project (740 photos and 50 minutes of WAV audio) even though the documentation for Videowave says you can have 900 photos in a slideshow. I eliminated VideoWave as the problem as it previews the whole show correctly.

I also believe that the 'Error while encoding menu error' was caused by a lack of virtual memory because after I updated my VM settings I never got this message again. (The harddrive where my project was stored is an external drive and VM had not been turned on for that drive.)

I photographed a concert last night so next I'll build a slideshow for it (less than 100 photos and 15 minutes of audio) and I suspect it will be fine.

Thanks for your assistance Bruce.

You are welcome, and let me know what happens with the shorter slideshow.

In post #18, you mentioned that you used some trial software to create the slideshow. What was that software? Does it also create a movie of the slideshow the way EMC 8 does?

It was ProShow Gold. Yes, it works pretty much the same way as EMC.

I checked and that is where the the disc's I have are from, CMC Mangentics. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how you look at it) I am not ready to burn a disc after all. I got an email from a someone wanting to contribute to the project, 3 days after the deadline! :) So I am on hold again until I get their photos tomorrow (and see if they have anything I can use).

I rebuilt the slide show from scratch, tested it in Preview mode and it plays fine. I then edited it and move a few things around. I saved it and previewed it again. Tomorrow after the next (and last) set of changes I'll try MyDVD to build the ISO again. I'll pick up a different brand of disc tomorrow, the place I go carries Verbatim and HP I think.

I post back later.

Thanks Bruce!!

I use Verbatim, and it has been fantastic. 100% successful burns, but you have to make sure your burner likes that brand.

Well the burn of the ISO file went off fairly well or appeared to anyway. Unfortunately when I played the DVD it only worked in 2 of the 3 DVD players I tried and at the end of the slideshow the audio kept playing but the slideshow stopped. Stopped on a blank slide that is not in the slideshow. One one player I tried the slideshow would stop for no apparent reason but you could restart it by pressing fast forward. Very strange.
