Conversion Advice / How To?

I'm trying to do a couple of things and I'm somewhat stumped on where to go, or if I can even do this in EMC9. Overall I would like to convert media into a portable format for my Creative Zen as well as a GPS reciever (that also plays AVI). So...

 

How would I convert from a DVD to AVI for the both portable devices? This includes both home grown videos as well as youth videos to keep my son occupied as we travel. I would like to convert to a supportable format as well as set the aspect ratio.

 

I haven't seen how to convert from a DVD to an AVI file. I do have some DivX movides that I tried to convert (the GPS doesn't support DivX), but my attempts have converted a 700MB (DivX) AVI into a 35GB AVI. The file size blew up and I wasn't able to convert to a 320 x 240 image.

 

I've done similar tasks in Pinacle and I'm considering on buying that application. I had box Roxio and Pinacle in my hands at the store and I chose Roxio, but this doesn't seem quite as intuitive. Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong areas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can use Disc Copier in Video Compilation mode to convert to WMV, Mpeg4, 3GP etc. but you'd have more control and choices using VW and the 'output as' under the File menu. If you're intention is to use a commercial DVD, I don't think you're in luck as EMC will not copy commercial copy protected video.
