Strange behaviour and problems

drbgaijin

Question

DVDit is getting there..... but as I chug along there are niggling problems turning up.

1. Out of memory warning when adding subtitles directly in DVDitPro. After a number of subtitles are added, I get an out of memory warning. I must exit DVDitPro to get the memory back again? Is there something I should be setting in Windows virtual memory?

2. Today I played through some new subtitles I had added. In the simulation they played correctly

After burning from an .iso file 2 adjacent5 subtitles had altered their timings. I went back to the original, checked the time-codes and the simulation again. All correct! Created another .iso and burned a dvd - the timings were wrong again!!!!!!

3. Added another short video to my project. Linked a button to it. Checked in simulation mode and the button highlighted as planned and the video played. After creating an .iso and burning the dvd the button did not highlight and I could not click the button and play the video. Checked again in DVDitPro and the button and link were working correctly in simulation mode.

Am I asking too much of a 500 dollar programme?

I am creating a DVD of about 16 short videos. There are about 6 menus linked to a main menu. From the sub-menus there are buttons that take you to the various videos.

Finally I ask yet again..... Is it better to address problems to Roxio Support direst or is the best way through this Forum or even Creative Cow?

Regards,

Douglas

Let's see how much I can fill in here.

Physical memory is 2GB

Card is ATI Radeon 9600 AGP with 256MB memory

(getting a bit dated..... but waiting for a new computer later this year)

The Virtual memory was set as 2046MB

But when I looked at the information there (probably for the 1st time ever!!) I saw that the recommended size was 3069MB.

I have changed that now.

However I have not had any chance to tryout DVDit and the subtitles yet...... to see if things are better or not.

C drive has 44GB free

The drive where I am storing my video files and have DVDit saving project info etc has 350GB free (It is a new drive just for saving the DVDit material)

Both drives are de-fragged regularly.

Douglas

While waiting hopefully for a reply from someone who has had similar problems I was able to make a little progress myself.

The Menu not linking was (naturally) due to a user (me) error.

In adding a 3rd video track and a new button as a link I did not checkout the "routing" table for that menu.

The 3rd video's button had not been added to the list automatically.

After I fixed it that problem disappeared......but.....

The question remains - Why did it work in simulation mode?

The subtitle timings are almost solved.

I deleted the subtitles around the problem one and did them again........ now it ALMOST works as I wish...... but there is still a timing lag in the finished DVD as compared to the simulation.

Out of Memory when adding subtitles is another sort of problem.

I should have added that the error number is given as -19021

Hope someone can reply to this problem.

Has it to do with Virtual memory size?

Douglas

Were you clicking the button with your mouse? DVD Players lack a pointing device.

Card should be fine, system requirements ask for a 16 MB card :P. Your system is pretty good and meets everything I can see. Make sure you have the latest drivers for your card.

Do you run any other applications while DVDit Pro is running? That could definetly be the cause of the error. Does your computer have any viruses on it? Never hurts to check. (Well, technically I've found many instances where it does, but lets not get into that. Use a virus scanner you trust.) Other than that, I think all I can do is provide a workaround. Use the import subtitles option, and write the subtitles in a separate text document. It allows you to avoid the problem entirely :).

Lol, well, notepad shouldn't be hogging up enough resources to give you an out of memory error. Hopefully after you increased your pagefile it will prevent the error.

Actually, one of the problems I've found with computers is: the more memory they have, the more they use. Just watching the idle process sometimes. And don't even try looking at a Mac... 10GB page files...

Good luck with your workaround :).

I'm new here and trying to get through some subtitle problems myself.

What I have noticed though is that assembling subtitles in DROPFRAME

movies need that extra script easily missed in the readme with the disc.

$DropFrame = TRUE which stopped my box from crashing, and rectified the self re-aligning of titles across each other, which in turn stops some of the other errors.

How much physical and virtual memory do you have? How much space is left on your hard drive(s)? What are your video card specs?

You can try increasing your virtual memory, but the information would be helpful.

Yes, I was. That explains that phenomena. Thanks for pointing me to the answer :)

No other programmes running.

No recent virus checks.... because that computer is not connected to the net and I have not been able to find a good virus checker for it that does not require a connection - either for installation or running!!

Can you recommend a virus scanner that can be installed on a stand-alone machine?

I tried the workaround earlier and although I could import the titles it seemed to be difficult to make adjustments in the in/out points. There was a lot of "overlaps" while making adjustments.... and many adjusted in/out points reverted to previous values.

What I have been doing lately is a hybrid of the 2 methods(?)

I make a text file without the in/out timecodes.

Open the add/edit subtitles window.

Find the in point then copy and paste the subtitle from an open Notepad window (OOps! that was 1 programme I had running!)

Since increasing the virtual memory, I have not created any longer series of subtitles. I will probably be doing that later today.

Thanks for all your efforts and advice.

Douglas
