Pixelating/tiling with fast/bright motion

JimDolan

Question

I've be using EMC9 for a while now to burn recorded tv shows to DVD+RW and DVD+R disks. I have a recurring problem that when there are very bright scenes following dark scenes, or if there is a lot of "activity" in the picture then EMC9 will cause a lot of pixelating (I've also seen it called Tiling) to occur in the output. I say in the output since it I have the problem whether I burn directly to disk or to an ISO file. There have been some shows that are unwatchable. In all cases I am recording to an MPEG-2 file format at 2.4 gig per hour so these shows will fit on a single disk without problem. I record using Hauppauge Wintv PCI cards and the mpeg file does not have this Pixelation in it when viewed using Windows MediaPlayer.

After reviewing another question that referenced Pixelating I tried changing the options to ensure that the software has control of the output and changed my setting from "fit to disk" to SP. Both changes (done separately and together) with no change in the output quality.

I also have a copy of EMC7 (pre-sonic so this is not totally a fair comparison) and it has no problem recording these shows without the pixelation.

My machine is an HP Pavillion Media center, running Windows Media center (although the problems occurs using XP as well) SP 2 , with an Intel Pentium D 2.8 ghz, 1 gig of memory, 224 gig hard drive (50% full) and and Nvidia Gforce 7900 GS video card with 256 meg memory.

Any ideas as to what to try next are greatly appreciated as this continued behavior is a bit frustrating.

Thanks in advance
