DVDit encoding

GaryC

Question

When I prepare video assets for DVDit Pro 6 they are already encoded (some are CBR and others 2 pass VBR) via another process (AdobePremiere and Canopus Procoder). I note that DVDit Pro 6 also encodes my already encoded video assets. Can I turn off DVDit's encoding facility and just have it author my assets as already encoded or must the the already encoded assets be re-encoded?

Also, if I must use DVDit's encoding facility, should the video assets be entered as unencoded AVIs (to avoid re-encoding already encoded video assets)?

Is the VBR encoding within the DVDit process a 2 pass VBR or 1 pass? The documentation doesn't say.

Finally, the Roxio knowledge base indicates that VBR encoding can cause problems on playback. Is this true? I've never used it on commercially replicated DVDs but have heard that it is a standard and often used. Are there really playback problems? If so, are these playback problems above a certain bit rate threshhold?

Thanks, Gary

DVDit should pass through your legal video and audio. which version of the application are you using? as far as VBR is concerned, you should be fine as long as your bit rate is not too high. bit rates greather than 7 can cause problems on DVD-R.

I want to revisit this post.

I, too, work with DVD compliant mpeg-2 files. In the past, these files never required transcoding in DVDit Pro 2.5. But in DVDit 6.0, when I write a DVD folder, I get the "building movies" box forever. It does not seem to be passing through the video. Is there anything that can be done about this?

My experience has been that the audio and video of imported assets must precisely match. Even a few frames will cause DVDit to reincode.

I use Canopus myself to encode all my files and I do create for commercially replicated discs. I've done hundreds and have never received a complaint from either a client, vendor or the lab.

I set a low end VBR of 6000 and a high of 9000. Perfect every time.
