golinux
I use Windows but also occasionally use Ubuntu. No place in the poll to show both. That's exactly what I was going to say. I'm hoping to go entirely Linux on my next box - I'll never run Vista. If there weren't a few Windoze apps that I can't live without, I would already have done it. Guest ml
Windows because I can't afford a Mac and the programs available are limited. However, you need to get whatever your college recommends. If you're going to an Art College, that's probably going to be a Mac.
gi7omy
XP and Gentoo here Sister - believe it or not, I have ECD 6 running in a 98 Virtual Machine on my Linux box
golinux
XP SP2 and mostly Ubuntu. I've installed about every flavor out there that has a decent installer (not into compiling kernels) but found Ubuntu to be the most user friendly. If I could get EMC 7.5, PS 7 and NoteTab running either under Wine or on a Virtual machine and get a decent modem (not a WinModem) I think I could handle the switch. gi7omy
They won't run under WINE - but as I said, 6 will run in VMWare (but you need to load 98 up in a Virtual Machine). The real problem with the higher EMC apps is that VMWare uses its own virtual graphics system and doesn't handle DirectX at all well Burning s/w - K3B isn't bad at all and for graphics, GIMP is a very good app (try it sometime - it's also available in doze format)
grandpabruce
(Snip) I'll never run Vista. If there weren't a few Windoze apps that I can't live without, I would already have done it. That is about the only thing we agree on. Maybe, if we both try, we may agree on other things in these forums, too. Even if we agree not to agree. REDWAGON
WINDOWS XP---Maybe Vista if it ever gets all straightened out. And that may never happen. Frank...
lynn98109
My current workhorse is Win2000. I had to move on from my Beloved, with Win98 SE, when I began having trouble accessing some internet sites. Perhaps it was more the 400MHz than Win98 SE, but I considered myself luck to get the Win2K, with a 1GHz PIII. My backup is a WinXP SP2, with a 2.4GHz Celeron. I detest WinXP - it's like it owns me instead of the other way around. I'll move to Linux before Vista - and probably never look back. Beerman
You are correct. I guess we have. We are also both adept at taking shots. Is this a Kodak moment for a group hug? Remember the date and time. Using the latest Ubuntu (7.04) I saw a huge jump in what it can do compared to the previous version. I still don't see it ever coming remotely close to Windows or Mac but I do like the commons sense approach of it. Since I installed XP/Vista dual boot on my new machine, I really haven't used Vista that much but Friday night I decided to use Vista all weekend and have with not 1 single problem. I've recorded 5 tv shows (3 with GBPVR and 2 with Media Center), made a small, 35 piece slide show with a few transitions and effects, balanced my checkbook, filled in a drivers ed form with Adobe Pro and my wife purchased books online. Nothing very serious but everyday things and I couldn't tell the difference. What that really means to me is why did they come out with Vista? It's XP wearing different clothes (when it works of course).
