MPEG v.s. AVI

rmart0729

Question

Hello,

Since I have owned EMC 8 I have created 3 movies. I shot all movies in widescreen and created the DVDs using widescreen as well. The first two movies I imported into EMC 8 in AVI video format and they looked great on the T.V. screen. The third movie I imported in MPEG format and it came out with a black box around it. Does anyone know why that is? I did everything else the same (i.e. filmed the movie in widescreen and made the DVD in widescreen.) I re-did this movie after re-capturing the video in AVI and it did fix the black box problem, but now the AVI project is 18GB according to MyDVD so I can't burn it. What happened??? The AVI file is only 4GB. The slideshow is 5 minutes long with 32 pictures and the video itself is only 35 minutes long. I know from these forums that you should be able to get up to 2 hours of video on a DVD project. How can I fix this size problem. The MPEG version of the project is 3GB according to MyDVD. Help!!!

Thank You,

Rich

I don't think the MPEG 2 format problem was ever documented as being resolved on this thread.

I also have imported widescreen videos from my MiniDV camera in both AVI and MPEG 2 format using the EMC 8 Media Import utility. When I play the resulting videos in Windows Media Player, the AVI formatted video shows up in widescreen format just fine, but the MPEG 2 formatted video is squashed into 4:3 format. Why can't I get the video to import into MPEG 2 format but in 16:9 ratio?

It seems that if the source MPEG 2 file doesn't display correctly, then it will not display correctly when I use it to create a DVD.

I have read through the help documentation and search online, but I have found nothing about this. Am I just not using the product correctly?

You left out the details that would provide the answers…

As to the mpg. The settings that you captured with probably did not include the widescreen setting, thus it was lost.

File size is generally a useless measure in video. Time is what counts! You state the avi is 35 minutes long so your project even with slides should be hovering around 2+ to 3gb.

For fun, start a new MyDVD project and load the avi file to see what it says.

I should caution you that I am far from experienced in using widescreen! I am hoping some others will weigh in on this thread.

Hello,

I got the answers I was looking for, so here they are in case anyone else runs into the same problem in the future. The reason my project was 18GB was because the project somehow duplicated itself. Also, when I try and import an AVI onto my external hard drive I only get part of the tape instead of the entire tape. When I import the AVI to my computer's hard drive it imports the entire tape just fine but it can't be moved to my external hard drive. I get an error saying there is not enough space on the external hard drive even though there is plenty of space.

So, anyway, I had to delete the old project that was giving me problems but I backed it up before all of this happened and then just replaced the AVI as the source instead of the MPEG and all was well. I'm VERY happy with what I learned from this experience. The video turned out GREAT!!!

Thanks,

Rich

Sounds like your external drive is formatted as FAT32 instead of NTFS. FAT32 has a 4gb limite in size per file, whereas NTFS does not. If you convert the external from FAT32 to NTFS the file problem on it should go away.
