EMC 9 VideoWave transition related crash

mfsumption

Question

After experiencing the VideoWave transition related crash, I reviewed all the topics here in the forum, updated my video drivers, and tried all the various tips and tricks, but I am still experiencing the crash. <_< Therefore, I have come to the conclusion that it is most definitely a bug even though it may not happen on all PC's. It appears to be happening on enough PC's to be a verifiable issue. One critical note: the bug only occurs (for me) when attempting to insert a transition into an existing production (e.g. a batch of photos brought over from the CineMagic Wizard). However when I create a new production in VideoWave, I can insert video, photos, and transitions (both 2D and 3D) and all is fine.

However when I create a new production in VideoWave, I can insert video, photos, and transitions (both 2D and 3D) and all is fine.

Another interesting note: when I attempt to reopen that "new" production and add a transition, *bam*, another crash, which further proves the scenario of crashing when attempting to add a transition to an existing production.

Actually, the transitions problem IS hardware related. EMC9 utilises the graphics as well as the CPU and really pushes them to the limit. If the graphics can't handle it, then hardware rendering will fail. There's no way round that

My video card is a GeForce 6800 with a driver date of 4/19/07 (the latest from the nVidia site). Yes, I tried those tricks. I believe that switching to software rendering enabled me to insert 2D transitions but not 3D. I am running XP Pro with all the latest updates on a Dell XPS 600.

In my opinion, as a software developer for 20 years, end-users should not have to jump through all these hoops to get the software to work properly. So, I hope the VideoWave programmers will take note of this topic thread, as I have provided enough information (in the original post) for them to identify the specific location of this consistently repeatable bug in the source code. The bug should either be resolved or at the very least trapped in a more graceful manner that doesn't cause the app to crash and burn.

It has been a while since EMC 9 was released and I am surprised that I don't see any updates/patches posted on their site or when I select the Check Updates option in the app.

even if it is vista reloated doesn't roxio have to fix it.

I have a toshiba a205-s4607

My problem as extensive testing is only at a certain phase of the slideshow creation process.

I have seen other people online say the same thing happened to them. How do we let Rpxio know so they can start working on a fix. I bought this laptop and the software so I can create great slideshows, burn them to dvds and give them as gifts

In your case, based on the "general" description of your problems, the issues you are seeing is not something that happens to most and is not caused by some bug in the software that needs to be fixed. that said, there is supposed to be an update for EMC 9 out "soon" that deals with the Vista certification. You can either wait and see if that helps you, or give some information so that others con offer some suggestions.

You could start by posting your system specs (like you see in a lot of the others signatures) and the steps you are following to create your slide shows.

With most laptops, it's almost certain that the graphics end of things just isn't up to the sort of work they are required to do with EMC9. It's an unfortunate fact of life and is not the fault of the software.

I can run EMC9 on this machine - but I know I have absolutely no chance of it functioning on my laptop

DOn't know what i can do to fix this . I only have this problem with the roxio and in the video wave sectiion

I'm afraid that particular graphics set just can NOT handle the video/graphics end of EMC9.

If you google for 'Graphics Media Accelerator 950 ' you will find a lot of posts saying it cannot handle a lot of apps or games

There are several variants on the 6800 graphics card - can you be more specific (ie, what letters follow of precede it, how much memory it has)

The fact that software rendering is working but it fails on hardware would make me think that's where your problem may lie

It is the generic 6800, no letters afterward, and has 256 Mb of RAM.

Yes, I believe that the issue is definitely related to the hardware; however, I don't fault the hardware as it appears (from other related topics in this forum) that this transition related issue has been occuring with other video cards as well. So, as I mentioned before, I hope the VideoWave programmers will take note (if they monitor this forum) of this thread and resolve the issue soon.

You said you tried "all the various tips and tricks", but that doesn't tell us which ones you've tried.

What video card do you have, and can you please post the driver date of it. (Available in DXDiag)

Did you switch to software rendering?

Did you open the program via the start->All Programs->etc... Method?

[edit] Also, XP or Vista?

Is there anything I can do to this machine to do what I want to do. I bought this specific laptop as it was supposed to be able to do the video and graphocs work I wanted. They installed roxio 9 for know knowing what i would be doing. If they said I needed a better laptop I would have gone for it.

I did google as you suggested and it only talks of gaming stuff. I don't use this for games so the googling told me nothng useful.

I know most of the posts refer to games, but if you read down you will see a lot of people saying that it just can't handle the graphics end - whhere the games might load, but they won't play

EMC9 unfortunately does require reasonable graphics ability (mid-range is fine) but the onboard chipsets are all low end and can't handle the processing they are required to do. With onboard chipsets, normally using a proper video card will work, but unfortunately with laptops you can't do that and you're stuck with what is built in

The fault here would lie with whoever sold you the laptop - it definitely cannot cope with the video end of EMC9

Unfortunately, it is crashing on software rendering also even on a brand new production (which goes against my prior scenario). If I insert a photo and stretch it over time and then add a 2D transition, *bam*, crash. So, all this to say that, "VideoWave is buggy and needs to be fixed."

I am so mad that I am having this problem but only in the ADD video effect and with certain ons like BLOB. I also can't figure out where it saves my slideshows to reopen one in progress and edit it. I am new to this type of video stuff and have anew laptop but how do we let ROXIO know about htis so a fix can be made.
