Play All Button

g8novice

Question

Hi, I have created a Play All button that does play all movies in the menu. However, it does not play in the sequence I want. Can someone please tell me how to set that sequence? I can't find this information in the on line Help Center or tutorial.

As mentioned earlier, I was able to re-order the sequence to have Play All play a movie first but whose button was not added first. Now the problem I am talking about is new and probably shouldn't be placed under the title Play All Button as this one is about playing movies continuously until the last one at any starting point where starting point is the movie button in the sequence one hits and I don't want it to play the movies in front of this one.

A DVD can have several separate titles (movies), and each can have an end action -- where the player goes after the movie's finished. In EMC9's MyDVD select the button for a title, then click "Show Settings", then set "After Playing" in the Link section... this will control the title's end action, determining what happens when that's title's over. *IF* what you're after is having video 2 play after video 1 and so on, this would be an easy way to do it.

Another option *IF* that's the sort of thing you're after, one with perhaps less delay between titles, would be to chain your titles into one longer video file. One button would be created on import, create chapters at least where the 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc segments start, then point unlinked buttons to that same title, setting the start chapter accordingly -- 2nd button to 2nd chapter, 3rd button to 3rd chapter and so on.

Otherwise, in many DVD authoring programs, as with MyDVD, importing your clips in order of play is the easiest method of ordering and keeping them in order.

Hi mikiem,

If I understand the OP's post, the bolded part above is exactly what he/she did on his/her first attempt. The result was that. with 4 titles, title 1 and 2 played but returned to the main menu after finishing title 2 rather than continuing to title 3 as would be expected based on the settings you explained. I tried it and confirmed that only a maximum of two titles will play and then return to the main menu regardless of the After Playing setting. Using the Go To Linked Movie/Menu option I described in my post allows all titles to play one after the other and only returning to the main menu after the last titled is complete.

I don' know if this is a bug with the After Playing settings or just some other settings I had wrong. All I know is that I could duplicate the problem, and I made sure I imported the titles in the order I wanted them to play.

Your suggestion to "chain the titles" into a longer video is certainly another good option to consider.

Select the button

Click EDIT MOVIE

Takes you to a 'Videowave' screen where the clips can easily be moved around.

Click BACK TO MENU above the preview when finished.

Well, I wasn't talking about movie clips under the same button. I was referring to (movie) buttons. For example, in my menu, I have five buttons, B1, B2, B3, B4, and Play All. When Play All button is pressed, it plays in the order of how B1 to B4 is arranged in the hieararchy under the menu list in the Project View pane. I found out you can take care of the playing sequence here. If anyone has other ways of getting the sequence set up, I like to know too.

HOWEVER, now I have another problem with individual buttons. Assuming I have the same 5 buttons as above, for each individual button setting, I selected the corresponding movie for 'Go to', selected the next movie I want to play for 'After Playing', i.e., if the sequence is B1, B2, B3, B4, then for B1 settings, 'Go to' is B1, 'After Playing' is B2, for B2 settings, 'Go to' is B2, 'After Playing' is B3, for B3 settings, 'Go to' is B3, 'After Playing' is B4, and for B4 settings, 'Go to' is B4, 'After playing' is either My Menu or Use Title Action. With this settings, here is what I expect and what it actually does.

Selection Playing Sequence

------------ -----------------

I expect B1 B1, B2, B3, B4

B2 B2, B3, B4

B3 B3, B4

B4 B4

What it actually does B1 B1, B2

B2 B2, B3

B3 B3, B4

B4 B4

Then I tried a different way. I went to Project Settings dialogue, selected 'Play movie and all remaining. But it does not work either. Here is how it turns out.

B1 B1, B2, B3, B4

B2 B2, B1, B3, B4

B3 B3, B1, B2, B4

B4 B4, B1, B2, B3

Can you tell me whehter I did not do it right? If so, how can I achieve what I want? Thanks. Sorry for this long write-up.

It turns out the table I created does not come out right. Please click the 'Add Reply' in order to see it, thanks.

Oh, I meant Reply, not Add Reply.

Hi Merv

Sorry about that -- I'm trying to test/learn Videowave/MyDVD and when I read the post, just tried it with two titles to see if that's what that control did. :P If it only works with 2, then I'd think it definitely a bug... Looking at MYDVD DVDs in PgcEdit, the more-or-less boiler-plate scripting they use won't trace all the way through [i'd guess probably not a problem, but haven't gone through it in depth, trying any of the repair macros or anything] I'd think that referring to a play-list/menu/scripting activates another bit of boiler-plate to bypass the bug.

I'll admit I'd have never thought of it -- linking to parts of a play-list shouldn't be necessary, and adds to script overhead, so I wouldn't expect it to even be possible. Great Catch :D

And again, apologies -- for whatever reason I got confused reading earlier posts.

I think MyDVD just selects the movies in the order they were added. For example, the first move added is button 1 and that can never be changed. When you create a unlinked button and link it to 'Play all movies on menu', then that movie will play first, etc. I've never really tried to force it to reorder the movies.

No apologies necessary. :) When I first posted, I just took the OP's word for it, because I had not tried to set end actions that way before. When needed, I had previously used the method I described to set the end action. After posting, I did try it with a play all button and 4 titles, and sure enough I could get it to only play 2 titles before returning to the menu as the OP described.

As you stated, I also think it is important to import the titles in the same order you will want them to play. Trying to jockey the sequence using whatever method in MyDVD seems to cause some problems.

Hi, g8Novice,

I have not tried this myself, so I am not 100% sure it will work.

1. As much as I hate to say this, start over with a new MyDVD project.

2. Since it appears you have a need for 5 buttons (4 movies and an unlinked button), select a background with at least 5 TEXT ONLY buttons on the Main Menu. Later, you can change the background, menu audio, etc. to anything you want.

3. Add an unlinked button by clicking DVD Menu>Add New Unlinked Button and rename the resulting button Play All or something similar.

4. Now, add each of the individual movies in the order you want them to play.

5. Rename the individual buttons as desired. In your example you called them B1 to B4.

6. Point to and right click on the Play All button and select Show Settings. In the Link window drop down the Go To: menu and select All Movies in Project.

7. Now, point to and right click on button B1 and select Go to Linked Movie/Menu

8. In the After Playing window, select Play Next Movie in Project.

9. Repeat steps 7 & 8 for buttons B2 and B3

10. Repeat step 7 for B4 but select Go To: and select My DVD Menu in the drop down menu.

Preview and see if that gets you what you want.

Hope that helps

Good New! I just found out by myself that by changing the hiearachy of movies on the list in the Project View area to match the sequence you want the movies to be played, you get it!!! But if someone has a different way to archieving the same thing, please let me know.
