Problems burning 90 min cds with Toast 8

JohnAllenIV

Question

I'm having some real trouble using 90 minute cds on my mac-mini with toast 8. When I put in A 90 minute cd and try to burn 748mb of information, the program tells me that I will need two discs, dispite the fact that I should have room to spare on one. When I go to the disc information, it claims that the disc only has 702mb of space, something that I know to be false. Is there any way to fix this bug?

Sense key errors are drive error reports. Try using different media. Check on the drive-makers website for the types of CDs that they tested.

Hi TOTG,

I solved the problem by using 'Best' writing speed for both CD and DVD. Initially, I was using 16x for the CD and I had the error.

The error message should says - INCOMPATIBLE WRITING SPEED rather than INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT?

Anyway, thanks so much!

Toast does not support burning more than 700 mb to any CD media.

Hi tsantee. I am new to Toast 8 as well. Previously, I was using Toast 7 and I have no problem burning CD more than 700MB, if the CD says 780MB.

Last night, I tried to burn/back-up 699MB files into CD and I got an error message that says:

Sense Key: ILLEGAL REQUEST

Sense Code: 0x30, 0x05

CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT

Can anyone tell me, what is wrong?

Thanks in advance.

That would be with Mode 2 Form 2 specification, like VCD or SVCD. A "700 MB"-CD-R can then contain ~798 MB without overburning. That won't work with data discs, such as ISO 9660 with AVI files.

Hi theoldarchiver,

But my situation is not burning AVI file. I was about to back-up normal file e.g. images and Illustrator file. My capacity was 699MB and my CD-Rom's capacity is 700MB. After the error, I reduced the size to 675MB and yet had the same error message (CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT). My setting is for 'Mac and PC' for Data Disk.

Will updating the Toast to 8.0.1 will solve this problem?

Okay, thanks for posting back with your success, and congrats on getting it working :)

The problem with error messages is they are given by the drive itself, and there are usually multiple potential sources for one specific problem. There are some sense code errors that, if you look them up on google, you can find a more accurate description of the problem. Some don't though.

Why?

My understanding is the extra-length CD media are not standard or universally readabke on various drives. Toast doesn't support burning discs that are non-standard so it won't do what is termed over-burning. Roxio may have a different official reason but I believe it is to minimize disc incompatibility issues.
