Newbie needs help converting/editing camcorder movies.

Question

Sorry, but being new to these forums and using the camcorder, I have slightly clueless about the terminology on this and other forums.

I saw a review of a Canon camcorder that said it writes movies in VRO format. What does that mean? Another review from a Canon DC40 owner said it shipped with MyDVD which worked well. I have the Canon DC210 which just says record in VR or Video format. What can I use to edit these movies and which format is better for editing? I'd like to be able to send the movies to people such that all they ahve to do is stick the DVD in a player and watch it.

I hope you guys have a suggestion as the posts I left in other forums have all gone unanswered.

Thanks for the response.

Clearly the search will continue.

I do not have any editing software, thus the question of what software will work for me?

I did read my camera's manual .. cover to cover. This is how I was able to tell you that it says it records in VR or Video formats. The only editing it references is in the camera to delete chapters or frames within chapters. That's it. Canon's response to the question of what software is compatible with their format is 'ask the software vendors.' There is nothing in the camera manual that references VRO or MPEG-2 .. only VR vs Video. Canon's response to the question of what the actual format is .. 'VR or Video'. They said they do not offer any support for editing .. they support 'record and play .. period'.

My needs are very simple. If there were such a thing as a slideshow application that would allow me to insert a chapter from my camcorder mini dvd in lieu of a photo, that's what I'm looking for. No editing frames or moving frames. Does Roxio have anything like this? Does anyone?

The software that came with the Canon???? The full version of EMC 9 does allow the renaming of those proprietary files to .VOB or .MPEG, and VideoWave will accept them.

Unfortunately you are asking for a course on video editing in a few short sentences.

VRO format is Canon's proprietary format for videos. Search these posts for the term VRO and you'll find that it is probably just a VOB or mpg2 file with another name. The VR format is one that allows the editing of the information on the disc. Your camera recods directly to disc. I assume that you want to do some editing before you send a full sized disc to your friends and family.

I'm not clear on what program you currently have if any. You might consider Easy Media Creator Suite. You would just copy the video to your computer's hard drive or capture it to a file. You may have to finalize the camera's disc before you can do that. Read your camera's manual. You would then use Video Wave to edit the video and to take out things you don't want and to add sections of videos from other files add transitions and perhaps music and then use MyDVD to burn the project(s) to the disc with menus

You can download a 30 day trial of EMC 9 from these forums to try depending on your computer hardware. Check for the minimum specifications before you download. Some laptops are not sufficient to do the editing. You can read the procedures to edit and burn here. You can watch some videos here. If funds are limited and you do want to buy a program, consider MyDVD 9 Studio Premier. It is close to the MyDVD that is in the full EMC 9 Suite or Deluxe Suite. It doesn not have the audio applications nor the back up applications.

The answer is YES. There are several Roxio products that allow that. Perhaps you are being confused by the VR format. Forget that for now.

Video Wave will allow you to add several smaller videos to have one project where there are several videos in one longer video file. ( The slide show except with video rather than still images). That is why I suggested the trial software. Video Wave is part of the EMC 9 suite.

If you only want to do video editing and not to have any additional audio editing features (making audio Cd, mp3 or DVD with audio files), there are other Roxio products that would work for you. One is the stand alone Video Wave and the other is the stand alone My DVD. Buy the best you can afford and one where your computer exceeds the minimum specifications. I assume you are using XP rather than Vista.

The camera will record in "video formats" - that is typically an mpg2 file with that name or similar. Those can be copied from your small disc to your hard drive, renamed if necessary and be edited. Look at Wikipedia for these terms for more help.

VR format is one where the video can be edited on that disc.

My apology to a Roxio competitor for copying this.

Quote: What is the DVD VR format?

DVD VR (Video Recording) format basically lets you create a DVD disc that you can re-edit. This saves you time because the edits are made directly to the disc without needing to import the video content back to your computer. You can add additional videos directly to your disc, trim or delete videos on the disc, add chapter points and revise your menus. "
