Missing option and picture size issue.

OregonRebel

Question

I just finished creating my first Video DVD, and I see some problems:

For the Menu background image, I used an image that has a lot of white throughout the entire image. Since the menu text is white, it's very difficult to read. There needs to be an option to change the Menu text color (font choices would also be nice).

The other problem is that the DVD's picture is larger than my monitor. When I'm on the Menu page, the text runs off the edges of the screen. The title text runs off the top, and the button text runs off the left & right sides. It's half a letter being cut off on the edges, and half the height is cut off the top text. This happens in every view mode: half, normal & fullscreen.

iBook G4 1.33 14", 1.25GB RAM.

I'm I to assume you're a fellow Oregonian?

The Dreamy Day menu style has colored text. Drop your background image on it. As for different fonts, each of the menu designs are different. The ability to add your own background and change the highlight color is new in Toast 8. It is possible to modify the menus if you have Photoshop.

I don't know why you have the problem with the menu size. Is it also a problem when played on a TV? Try scaling your background photo to 640x480 before dropping it into Toast. Does that change anything.

You can choose Save as Disc Image and then mount the disc image for playback with DVD player to do your tests. If all is okay then burn the disc image using the Image File setting in the Copy window. Don't have a playable DVD in the drive when you mount the disc image or DVD Player will play the DVD instead of the mounted disc image (unless you select it via DVD Player's File menu).

Yep, right here in wacky Eugene. You've helped me before.

I saved the DVD as a disc image, then played it in DVD player, and got the same results; image still too large. The size of the image I used for the background is 628x483. I had to crop the image many times in Photoshop to get it positioned just right, so the buttons didn't cover up important aspects of the image, thus the odd size.

Tried a different Menu Style, and the text was cut off even more.

Okay, I installed a freeware app to get a screenshot for you.

Tsantee, how do you get any work done or have free time, when you spend so much time helping people on this site?? I'm starting to think Roxio is paying you for each issue you help resolve. They should!! Well, you better take today off & enjoy Saturday Market.

Hope you had fun at Saturday Market. I couldn't make it there because I need to catch up on the work I've missed while responding to these posts. Just kidding. Roxio doesn't pay me but they have sent me t-shirts. The need to learn to tie-dye.

I don't recognize the menu style you used. Granite came close. In any case I tested with an image scaled the same as yours and it all looks fine. So my guess is you should trash the Toast plist and prefs files and maybe reinstall Toast itself. Also, consider choosing the option for fewer buttons per menu page so there is more space for text.

I've lived here more than 20 years and been to Sat. Market twice. Same with Eugene Celebration, I think.

Yes, that's Granite. I'm trying to put two seasons of a tv show onto discs. Each season has 10 episodes, so I want to put 5 on each disc. That's why I don't use fewer buttons. I shouldn't have to.

Here's a link to the image, if you want to try it in your toaster. http://img111.imageshack.us/img111/7502/we...pertoastba3.png

I trashed both preference files, then tried again.

Overnight I created another disc image on my iBook-same result.

I also created one on a friend's iBook-same result. His iBook is a different model but has the same screen size.

I'm gonna try again, this time giving the buttons short names, to see if that brings them toward the center, like your screenshot.

Shorter button titles helped on the sides, but the Menu Title text is still cut in half on the top. And it's not just the text. Your screenshot showed the buttons all fit neatly in the center of the screen. My buttons are too big and even their edges are cut off on the outer buttons.

I tried Dreamy Day, and the darker text helped, but it's such a thin, strange font that it was harder to read than the bold white Granite text.

What the heck could the problem be? Why would it happen on 2 iBooks, but not your 'puter?

I don't know why this is happening for you. I just tested again with my G4 iBook and the menu looks fine. I'm using 4:3 videos whereas yours are 16:9, but that shouldn't matter with the menu. Are your source videos shot with a camcorder? I could create some 16:9 clips with my camcorder and give that a try to see if anything is different. What's especially odd is I can't recall anyone else posting this problem. Maybe it does have something to do with the source video files although I can't think of why.

I don't know how they were recorded, but I'm giving up on this.

Wish we could've figured out the problem though, so I don't have this issue in the future. I think I'm gonna try once more with a different image, just to check.

Thanks for trying. See you 'round town. B)

Hey, at least this thread got me from Newbie to Rookie.

Tried it again, using Granite and only one button. Same #$^@ thing happened!! The button stayed in the upper left corner of the screen, where the #1 button was before. Shouldn't it have moved near the center? WTF could be causing this? This is just weird! I'm thinking I should have stayed with Toast 7!

In the menu set up window do you have the Number of Buttons set to Automatic or do you have it set on 6?

Have you tried trashing and reinstalling Toast 8.0.1?

Automatic.

Since it did the same thing on another iBook, with a completely different Toast install, I see no reason to trash my app. If it was just my machine, I would have.

If you want we could agree to meet and you can give me one of the DVDs with the faulty menu and I can create a new one for you. You can even ask me to change the color of the font. I'll redo the DVD as a courtesy to a fellow Eugenean, but I'd have to charge you something for modifying the menu in Photoshop. After all my business is Photo Story which makes various products for people from their photos. Send me a private message if you want my help.

Thanks, but I think I'll just forget it. I need to transfer the files to DVD, so I thought I'd try out the Video DVD feature, but I'll just burn 'em as data. Makes me mad though, as I'm not getting full functionality out of something I paid for. Even stranger that no one else has reported this issue.

So long till next time. And thanks again for your time & help! :D
