Menu order incorrect when arrow keys on remote control are used

Question

SOLVED: See message #10 below.

I'm using Music Disc Creator to create a music DVD which combines the tracks of 4 CDs. I've adapted a built-in style that has a vertical menu, and I've kept that menu vertical. The menu items are standard ones:

  • Track lists
  • All Tracks
  • Tracks (A-Z)
  • Album
The order of the items is the same as what was in the original "Standard" style (in Music Disc Creator.

When I test the DVD's I've burned n a DVD player, using the up and down arrows skips items on the menu, differently depending on whether I'm going up or down the menu. On the way down the list it hits the 1st, 3rd, and 4th items, then the Play All button (skipping the 2nd menu option). On the way up the list it hits the 4th, 2nd, 1st, (skipping the 3rd menu item).

I've tried spacing the menu items out more, but that didn't fix it.

Any other ideas on how to fix this problem?

... I'd advise that you render to a .iso image file and then open that in Disc Image Loader so that you can check it before actually committing to writing to the disc itself.

You could try rebuilding it and then see what happens

Is the .iso file the same as a .c2d file? I create my discs using the "save disc image file" option in Burn:

Also, how do I rebuild it in Music Disc Creator?

... I made a disc with the same 4 menu items.I didn't move anything around before burning. If I put it in my DVD player it seems to function just fine.I can move up and down with my remote and nothing gets skipped.

If you open say All Tracks and try and move up and down do you get the same problem? If not and you didn't move anything around there then maybe that is the problem.Or maybe it's like Daithi said and it was just a problem in the rendering process.

That's a good question. All the other menus work as expected. I suppose that tells us that I've probably changed something in the way the main menu is working.

Okay, here's the solution.

I've run into something similar at work in web pages, and reflecting on that made me wonder if the shape of the clickable areas was the problem.

So, I made the menu items all the same width and made sure that all menu items had left and right borders that lined up vertically. This seems to have fixed the problem.

Thanks for helping me think about the issue!

Hi, Gi7omy,

Hmm, I'm not sure. What do you mean by "manually selecting" the menu? (The problem I'm seeing is on a DVD player with a remote control.)

I just tested the actual DVD on my computer with Windows Media Player. The arrow keys make the same skips over the 2nd and 3rd menu items (depending on direction). That tells me that the order is messed up on the DVD rather than being a player problem.

I didn't change the order to the items, but I did move them on the screen to be further to the left and higher (as I recall).

It's possible they are messed up in the rendering.

The 'manual' bit - my player has buttons on the case that lets you use it when the remote can't be found (our dog tends to hide it) But, if it's also skipping on the computer, you could be on the right track

It's hard to say what you should do really - but I'd advise that you render to a .iso image file and then open that in Disc Image Loader so that you can check it before actually committing to writing to the disc itself.

Not that this will help but since we figured out the last problem I thought I'd post.
