system crashes

Duffy

Question

I have two liteon dvd writers with lightscribe features. They are model shm-165h6s. I have the newest firmware installed and as soon as I start to burn a cd or dvd, my system crashes and I have to actually unplug the computer and wait at least 30 seconds before I can plug it in again and it will restart. I am using 4 Gig of ram, have amd 64x2 4200+ processor, Nvidia Geforce 7600gs video card, have tried every brand of cd and dvd that I can get my hands on but all to no avail. I repair and build computers for people, but I thought that I would let the tech at a very reliable service center that I know see what he could find. When I got back over there, he had removed ECM9 suite, and installed Nero 7. Everything worked fine. He uninstalled Nero, reinstalled ECM9. and nothing worked. What is going on? Any suggestions? I like Roxio better than Nero but this is rediculas.

I honestly can't answer there as to why one drive is being recognised while the other isn't (and from what you've said about it working with Nero would tend to rule out the drive itself being faulty)

One thing tho - are both the drives master/slave on the same ribbon? If they are, try them on two separate connections (ie, one as slave to the hard drive and the other on the second IDE connector)

I am using a MSI 7250 MB. It doesn't give me the ability to use a second IDE as it only has one. It has a bunch of SATA drive cables. That may be the answer. I just changed the cable to 80 wire flat instead of the cables, which were 80 wire, that came with the motherboard. I have been building and repairing systems for a number of years, and this really has me stumped. I have been able to do what a lot of techs couldn't on systems, but this one really has me down. I really don't understand the shutting down of the whole computer and power supply. I am going to spend some time today trying to figure out this one. I have really liked Roxio up until this point, and would like to continue using it. I am going to swap out some drives and things like that and will keep you posted. Thanks for all your help.

It's gotr me stumped too - one thing to try if you don't mind (just to satisfy my curiosity)

What happens if you dsiconnect the working drive and leave the non-working one in (or swap them round as M/S)?

I just want to find out if the drive itself works on its own without having a second one on the same IDE channel

Pity you weren't a bit closer - I've a couple of spare ABit Serillel 2 adaptors sitting here ;)

I have a similar setup with SATA, but I have a Dell H-L Data Storage CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive with a Sony DRU-800A. Both on the same cable with master/slave (master being the Sony).

Every time I try to burn a DVD from MyDVD, I receive an error:

"VideoWave 9 has encountered a problem and needs to close".

It seems to be a problem related to ntdll.dll.

When I remove the Dell installed CDRW (the H-L Data Storage model GCC-4482B) everything works like a champ; however, as soon as the H-L Data Storage CDRW is connected: ::blam:: the error returns.

I kinda liked having two drives, but apparently the two drive system just is not going to work. I wonder if your error and my error are similar. I think there is a problem with having two drives in the system. I can get the error 100% of the time when I connect the HL unit. Once I disconnect it, it works 100% of the time (no errors).

I know what you are going thru. I think that I have the problem figured out and just need a few days to check it out. The problem that you are having is that computer manufacturer's use some of the cheapest equipment to build systems and don't think that a person will ever add to it. I had a HP computer that would give a client of mine a blue screen of death every once in a while. I finally got done to disconnecting a piece of equipment at a time as I had already checked the memory, pwr supply, processer and so on. When I disconnected the original drive, the problem went away. I replaced his orignal with a new one, with his permission and he has never had a problem since. Right away when I read your post, I could really feel the pain that you are going through. I would just replace the drive and see if that doesn't solve your problem. My solution is that I just elimated the ide and went with two SATA burners. I haven't had a problem since, but as I said, I need a few days to check it out. I want to try and burn two dvd's at the same time and two cd's at the same time. If it will do that I think the problem could be considered fixed. I have burned a cd in both drives, but one at a time. I will keep you posted. Take care.

Did you update your video drivers to the latest from nVidia and also install the latest DirectX 9.0c from MS?

I have updated all drivers for everything that I could. I have the two dvd/cd recorders and it only recognizes one on the drag to disk icon also. I just burned the same file using my sisters computer with roxio 8. It worked fine. I then uninstalled 8 and installed 9. All the problems came to her system too. The only difference is that she has a different brand of burner. I uninstalled 9 and went back to 8 and it is working fine now.

This thread sounds just like my experience with 9. All bad. It won't recognize drives, won't write, brings up the blue screen and restarts or just crashes. Nero works fine. I've vasilated between Nero and Roxio for years. Roxio has been on top until now. This buggy version has relegated it to a drawer. Running XP on a new Vista ready tech built PC.

Thanks for your input. I went and got an adapter for the drives to convert them to sata, as suggested in an earlier reply and hooked them up that way. Still a problem. I have talked to the techs where I buy my parts for building systems and they say that there has been at least 20 complaints with 9 from their builders. I can't believe there hasn't been any updates for 9. Just to let you know, I am running an MSI K9N SLI Platinum MB, 2 sata HD's, 4 Gig memory, AMD 64 X2 4200+chip, Geforce 7600 GS PCIE video a 650 watt Power supply, Soundblaster sound and 2 Liteon DVD combo writers with Lightscribe, and Windows XP. So far to try and stay with 9, I have changed the DVD burners, changed the cables, changed the power supplies, changed all the memory, updated all the drivers and firmware, tried different media and no resolution. I keep getting emails from Roxio to update to 9, and that is what I have. I am running the same software on two other computers, a laptop and my service computer, all with the same problems. In 16 years of building and working on computers, I have got a great following, even receiving computer from Florida, Neb. Indiana and all over the state of Texas. People go with what I advise, and trust me. I used to advise them to use EMC, but can't honestly advise that now. Heck, I can't even burn a disk with confidence now, not knowing if the system will crash or not. Thanks for your input

Soprry I wasn't much help to you - all I can say is that it works fine on my machine, but then I only use one optical drive and that's slaved to one of the three ATA drives on the board (the SATA is used for the RAID array, hence the 'spare' Serillels)

I've been googling that drive - it seems that it needs the 80 wire cable and won't work properly with the 40 wire one.

Have you tried changing the ribbon cable to 80 wire?

I think that is the only one thing that I haven't done. It does have an 80 wire cable, but I will change it. I can't believe that I am having so much problem with one program. Also, Roxio drag to disc only thinks I have one drive. Is that something useful to know. The rest of Roxio recognizes the second drive.

Thanks

Duffy

You have been a great help, jogging my memory and giving me things that you would try. I think it is something that 9 doesn't like. Maybe the fact that I am using sata drives as primary drives, and the cd's as ide. My supply said this morning, that they would loan me two SATA cd/dvd burners. If they fix the problem, I will purchase them. If not, just bring them back. They thought that the adapters could create a problems some times. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks again
