problems copying files from burned DVDs

studiorhythm

Question

Hi, I've been having a weird problem -- I've burned a few data DVDs with Toast 8 that have verified and work perfectly with my computer. However, when I've brought them elsewhere, some other Macs won't be able to copy the files from the DVD -- they get an error saying "you don't have permissions to copy some of these items" (or similar). The same DVDs work fine on the machine I burned it on (MacPro running 10.4.9), my laptop (MacBook with 10.4.9), my wife's XP laptop, and a friend's MacBook.

The machines that won't allow the files to be copied from the DVD are both PowerPC Macs (one running 10.4, not sure about the other).

In Toast, I selected the DATA (Mac & PC) option to burn the discs.

Burning CDRs with the same settings works fine on all computers including the ones that had problems with the DVDs -- any ideas as to why these DVDs aren't working in PowerPC Macs?

Thanks for your help!

Does anybody from Roxio read these posts? This would be an amazingly simple test to perform and I'd love to hear an answer either way on whether or not this is an issue isolated to my system or not.

If nobody from Roxio is going to respond other than to say "I'm kind of surprised this is happening...", does anybody else reading this have the ability to test by burning a data DVD-R on a MacIntel and then copying the files from it on a PPC Mac? It'll take 5 minutes, and I'd really appreciate hearing your results!

I think there could be a real issue here, either with Roxio or Apple I'm not sure which.

I'm waiting on details from a company that provides us with data DVD disks. I've had a problem with a couple data DVD disks not working at all on my Mac Pro that work perfectly on a Powerbook G4. I've had to restart my system about dozen times today because of these disks.

I try to get info on the disk or files on the disk and it locks up my finder.

I try to copy files to my desktop and the file copy window pops up but the copy never starts. or goes anywhere.

I did a quick google search after I realized that the disks work fine on the G4 and this is the thread that I found. I will post details when I get more info and do some more testing.

When you return please post the make and model of the drive Apple installed in your Mac Pro. Also, check if there are any user reports of problems with this drive in the drive compatibility database at www.xlr8yourmac.com and in the Mac Pro forum at discussions.apple.com.

Anybody? It'd be nice to hear something back from Roxio on this.

Can you try burning a DVD on an intel mac and then copying the files on a PowerPC Mac and let me know what happens? This is a serious issue for me since I use DVDs as a delivery format for mixes all the time!

When you are reading the discs in the other systems, are you using the finder or are you opening some files with certain applications directly from the disc. Sometimes that makes a difference. Try to use the finder to simply copy the file to the hard drive and then open it. If the finder says that you don't have permission to the file I would be kind of surprised.

Just using the Finder to copy to an internal drive. I've never seen anything like this before, so I was surprised too. So was the mastering engineer who was trying to use the 2nd DVD that had this problem -- he had never seen this before. He was able to get the data off by just copying the disc, and his copy worked fine.

I tried burning another identical DVD for him to try again to see if that would work, and the same thing happened. And then a friend of mine tried copying files from another DVD to his G4 and got the same error -- but it worked fine on his MacBook.

So it seems there's something strange going on that may be linked to the PowerPC Macs. Has anyone just tried burning a DVD on a MacPro and then trying to copy the files to another drive on a PowerPC Mac?
