wish I'd stuck with Nero

Question

have spent the last three days trying to get EMC9 to install correctly...the first installation went well, I thought, until I tried to access drag/disc and my system (the whole thing) locked up - almost wouldn't restart...went thru tech support and received (eventually), and followed the uninstall directions, from windows clean up thru to registry edit...completed, and tried to reinstall - this time thru I started getting an error message midway thru the install saying "insert disc"... then two or three more times thru the clean-up process, then a few hours waiting for live chat who had nothing more to say than "do it again - we're smart, we know what the problem is and this will fix it"...so I did it again...and managed to reinstall, only to have the whole system go crashy crashy again...and then I get a scolding from tech support for opening a second ticket

this is a legitimate, purchased copy of the software - not something I snagged off the internet...any suggestions from actual users on how to make the it work?

would a couple of follow-up question be permitted? I'm asking here, because I think the problems are related to my installation issues, but if not, I'll be glad to delete or post elsewhere...

1) every once in a while a small CD graphic appears beside the cursor - like the one I used to get when Nero was 'thinking'...I had Nero6, and that's the clean-up I ran, as well as InCD - is there a possibility that its still there after the clean-up?...should I just run them all?

2) I've managed to burn a DVD, but the disc copier program fails as soon as the burn is complete...it stops responding, and won't even close with TaskManager

3) does Roxio over-ride my CD burner? I was just trying to burn an avi file onto CD thru the usual Windows sequence, but it asks now that a CD be inserted into Drive F (the DVD burner, which doesn't recogise it) instead of Drive C, where I always used to put it...sorry for being such a dunce - as if you hadn't already figured it out, I'm very new to all this

Did you completely uninstall Nero? If InCD is still lurking on your machine then it will clash with drag to disc.

No two packet writing programs can co-exist on the same computer (they both fight to control the drive)

yes - I ran the windows clean up on Nero as well...hell - I was in there so many times, I was taking all sorts of stuff out!...can you suggest any names other than Nero that it might be hiding behind?

No, if you ran the version you know you had + InCD it should be gone.

If you would like run it again, fine.

I think a good uninstall of the programs that aren't working and reinstall, after the windows install cleanup utility. Then a Spy-sweeper program, virus sweep, and a registry clean tool. Followed by a disk defragmentation.

ok - well - apparently Nero is possessed...I *thought* I got that one, but at your suggestion, looked again and there it was...I'm in a terror of restarting yet again, as its made whole thing comes up without the taskbar once or twice during this nonsense...anyway - thanks - hope I can get back and report that its all fixed!

Of course the safest thing is to always keep a recent image backup of your boot drive around so should the system become truly unusable, you can get back to a known point. Quickest is to have it on another HD, either internal or external. (Though I realize that that isn't germane to solving your installation problem.)

thank you again for all the help - perhaps tech support should work for *you*)...

following all of your suggestions - had a bad crash this morning when I tried to access Roxio, but managed to bring it back up - disconnected the external HD, and DVD burner and removed Roxio in SafeMode - seems ok now, but haven't re-connected any of those things )

thanks again for all your help - I think the thing is actually working now, though I hold my breath every time I access it...wouldn't have gotten this far without the support I rec'd here!

I had the same problem, but the Email Tech Support told me to copy the install disk to my hard drive and install from there. This worked, after following the Clean install instructions. I did not see this same advice in this mesage string.

Good Luck.

That has been mentioned in a lot of threads but mainly where the installation fails halfway through. It's not the solution on this particular case

*head desk* should have looked there!... thank you for being so helpful - y'all are incredibly generous with your time and knowledge...

thought I had this solved - actually managed to successfully burn a DVD file today, but then after I walked away, the program stopped responding, and I had the whole slow restart issue occur again...thoought I'd run the Nero cleaner just in case that's the problem...(taking out the last "Ahead" made the last installation go thru)

perhaps not germane to installation, but very much appreciated as a suggestion...I know just about enough to be dangerous, and think I've been toying with the blue screen of death...I *did* export a copy of the registry to the desktop before doing the edit (as if I'd know what to do with it if I made an error)...is it acceptable to ask "do I do that the same way with the boot drive?" here?...don't want to get too OT

if not - its something I could find at Windows help, yes? that's such a labyrinth at times, and it seems everything I look at comes with a bolded red warning "do not try this at home"!

CD has given you some good links. I use Acronis True Image myself. If you have a second HD installed in your machine with enough room, it's very fast to make an image of your C: (the typical boot drive) there. If not, you may want to consider getting an external USB drive to make your image to.

Hope that helps!
