Lost pictures and files on burned CD

SheDragon

Question

I updated my Windows 98 to XP Media Center edition. However, some of the files I copied to CD on Windows 98 is not being read by the new computer. The photos are the ones I would really like to retrieve. The HP external drive CD writer that I had used Adaptec Direct CD to make the copies. Any idea how to retrieve my pictures? I still have the external drive and the software that came with it. Can I safely install the software and external drive on the new computer? Would that let me retrieve the pictures? Thanx in advance for any help.

That is an odd situation… XP has a built in packet reader and should be able to read those discs as long as they are not too old (RW discs fade) or damaged.

If you chose the DirectCD option to Compress the Data, you are going to be out of luck as neither CD Roller or ISO Buster can decompress those discs!

Still I would try their free trial download to see what it might be able to do.

Another option would be to purchase a version of V6, V7 or V8 and install it along with Drag to Disc. It would be able to read the older compressed formats and allow you to copy them to your HD. – I do not know about V9's D2D compatibility with older versions. The oldest D2D disc I have was written with V6.

You just discovered why you should have used Creator Classic instead of packet writing software. You might be able to recover the files, if you use a program like CD Roller or ISO Buster. Neither are free.
