Aspect Ratio and Scaling for Video

hickory

Question

I have experimented with manually changing the aspect ratio in a VideoWave XML production file. Roxio indicates only 16:9 or 4:3, but it can be changed in the XML. VideoWave will generate a video clip with the overridden aspect ratio by filling in the "empty" top and bottom with black.

Has anyone worked with this and what has been your experience?

Also, there is a "Scaling" tag in the XML production file. (There are also a Handles, Translation and Rotation.) Does anyone worked with these? There is nothing in VideoWave Help about these features. (I understand Roxio probably doesn't support messing around with these elements.)

I haven't ever messed with them, and you are probably correct in your thinking of why Roxio doesn't have info on them in the Help files.

With this method, I have been able to reformat a widescreen movie for better viewing on a 4:3 TV. The view is a little stretched vertically but is not too bad. Also, Pan and Zoom can be overridden (it's really cropping) by altering only the left and right crop. (I wish Videowave would allow dragging only the side handles of the rectangle in the Pan and Zoom Editor since manually cropping in the XML file works very well to give any proportions desired.) By cropping only the sides by as little as 5% and not the top and bottom, you can reduce the vertical stretching while significantly reducing the loss of the left and right sides of the movie.

I have been looking for a simpler way to do this -- and using the Roxio features instead of trying to override them.
