Capture Entire Tape / Capture Now greyed out

John Breakwell

Question

Using Roxio MyDVD 9 Studio Premier, selected Video, then selected Media Import, click Video button, device selected was Sony DV Device, the software display showed Sony DV Device, Quality was AVI DV Format or MPEG-2 Format, Status : Ready To Capture, Save To : My Videos but Capture Entire Tape and Capture Now were both greyed out. What is wrong? I can control the Sony from the Dell using the software but I cannot capture the video. The Help facility displays Step 8 for "Importing Live Video From a DV Camera" to click Capture Now, but its greyed out. Is there a manual for this software available to download? <_<

Please try to press the stop button when or after the roxio initialize the DV then come back to video capture again. If you problem is similar to mine, it may work sometimes. Please read my post for detail. I am also asking help here.

thanks, updated to KB885222 also 1394 is OHCI Compliant but still no joy, Capture Entire Tape and Capture Now still greyed out.

If I get any success I'll let you know but everything I;ve done so far has made no difference.

Click here to download the manual. But sounds like you are doing everything correctly. Very easily could be a cable problem. The computer did recognize the camcorder correctly and so did Media Import, but perhaps the cable came loose or was accidentally knocked at some point. I have seen problems like this with cheaper cables. Also make sure the camcorder is connected to the AC adapter. The capture will go gray if the camcorder shuts off automatically which can happen on battery power.

Thanks for the information regarding the manual which downloaded Ok.

My main problem is with the capture. I know the cable is Ok because I used some other software to capture the same video tape from the same camcorder to the same laptop. The camcorder was connected to the AC adapter and the power switched on so it was not a power issue. Any other ideas?

I may have a breakthrough, it is definately a software problem, try the following procedure :-

Start then All Programs, Roxio MyDVD, select My Media, in Media Manager select Tools, then Launch, select MyDVD, go to File and select Plug & Burn, in my case I chose No Menu and clicked Next, enter a Movie Name to suit your project, click Capture Entire Tape. This procedure worked and produced a DVD but the original problem when taking the Video and Media Import route to get the Capture Entire Tape or Capture Now buttons to become active still exists. Keep me informed if you get any reponse from Roxio.

Sorry, I accidently hit the edit button.

Only one other thing you may try. Most everyone has SP 2 now. Check out this:

Update for Windows XP (KB885222)

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 2, some 1394 devices (such as digital cameras that use S400 speed) may not perform as expected.

Firewire SP2 Fix

You can also check in Device Manager to see what 1394 chipset you have. Make sure it says 'OHCI Compliant'.

Yes. I agree with you that this is definitely a software problem. But I don't think roxio is reading the response of customer here. If they do, they should have noticed that so many people are experiencing the same problem with different DVs. They should have done something by now. Now I am using Nero for video capture. The interface is not as good as Roxio. But at least it always works.

I'm having the same problem. In ECM I can see the video, play, FF, etc. but the capture buttons are grayed out. I'm also using a Sony camera, is everyone who has this problem using a Sony? Mine is a Handycam, several years old. I can capture fine using Nero, but it's extremely annoying to have paid for software that won't work properly.

Instead of trying to graft on to a month old thread, first try the Search.

If nothing shows up, then start a new thread with more details about your PC, your camcorder and how the two are connected.

Hank, I have EMC 9 and have successfully captured many videos, via firewire, from my Sony handycam with no problems whatsoever.

So it isn't necessarily ONLY the software. I have no clue why some software works on some computers and not others, so if you find one that works for you, you have to use it.

I have Nero on my computer, and I sometimes use it to burn data, but for video work, it measures up as an extemely low end entry level product. If you can capture using Nero, do so. You can always use EMC 9 for the editing and burning.

On the contrary, this proves my point. From Roxio point of view, it may not be their problem because it works on your handcam. But as an end user, only roxio has problem with my handcam while many other software work. it is definitely their problem. Their software has compatibility problem.

Well, then so be it. As I said before, use what works for you.

Your point is only proven from your VIEW. If every single person that has the same camcorder as you were having an issue, I'm sure we would have known that by now or if a larger percentage of users were having the same issue. Even though others HAVE posted a similar issue, percentage wise those posts are very FEW. Most of the problems we see here can not be reproduced and are particular to each user's computer. Could be how you have it setup or conflicting software / drivers.

Hi Guys, I am experiencing exactly the same problem with the greyed out capture buttons. I'm running Sony HDR-HC3 on XP Home via firewire. I can control and see the footage in the capture application but am unable to capture. I confirm that I have tried everything you already suggest but no joy... Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Adrian

Make sure that you have something in the boxes for the name of the download and the location on your hard drive, or I don't think you will get the Capture now button to light up.

I don't have my video camera available, so I can't try it, but I think the same thing happened to me.
