If you Legally Purchased these movies, you may Legally copy them under the FREEDOM of USE ACT. They tried for years to outlaw cassette, reel to reel, 8 track recorders etc. This fight is decades old and they ain't won yet. The Laws were formed when Hotels started to advertise rooms with FREE HBO. That was making a profit off of them and the Actor's Guild, Screenwriter's Guild, ASCAP, BMI and so many others got angry, with every right. For your own use, it is LEGAL. <edited for content>.

It is a debate that keeps on keeping on. I'm not sure that it'll ever be settled to everyones satisfaction, but in the meantime, it is currently still unlawful in the USA and Canada (which Roxio/Sonic is based out of) to break copy protection on discs and downloads you have purchased. Until that changes, they aren't going to change their software, and they will not allow discussions on here that will lead one to ways to do so.

Tell that to 3-2-1 Studios. They were forced to close down in 2004. It isn't legal in the U.S, Canada, and most other countries in the world.

Sorry folks, It is VERY Legal and if 3-2-1 was closed it was for other reasons than what is being discussed. If you purchased a movie on a Commercial VHS or DVD and you want to make a copy for YOUR own use, it is legal, 100%. Making cassette copies of LPS for use in a Car is 100% legal and falls under the same guidelines. Now if you want to try and make a profit in ANY way from that copy, then it is ILLEGAL.

******* is a legal copy who sells their software for legal purposes and if you want to buy it and use it for Illegal purposes then you are breaking the laws and not them. ******* is located in Europe. There are many software programs here in the states that offer the same thing and do so Legally.

ASCAP and BMI have never won a single case where it was for personnal use or archiving.

So if you folks are insisting it is ILLEGAL I will now challenge you to produce a copy of the law that you are referring to.

These challenges have been going on for decades and it was once tried to put a ROYALTY TAx on every Balnk Tape sold. That failed and that was back in the late 70s. If it was so illegal to do, then to record movies with VCRs would have been illegal and the recorders would not have been allowed to be sold. It was ASSUMEd that the VCRs were to be use within the home. Bootlegging is very illegal, making archive copies is NOT.

I am not going to take part in a arguement here, but whether it it falls under "FAIR USE" which pretains more to examples such as singing a song that belongs to someone else while walking down a street than archiving. Freedom of Use is a Freedom that belongs to everyone and to take that Freedom of Use away is where the challenge has been. If what is being said here is Illegal, these companies, including Roxio who gives the ability to COPY would be Shut down. They haven't for NO LAW says YOU can NOT archive copy.

If it is Illegal in some countries, which it very well may for CENSORSHIP is ALIVE and well in many countries, I can not speak. I am American and I speak as an American, and I do not promote breaking laws. Here in the states there is NO LAW that forbids archiving a copy of anything, for your own use. If this is against Roxio Policy to discuss this, then Roxio supports censorship.

I've never heard of the Freedom of Use Act. If you are referring to HR 1201 IH -- Freedom and Innovation Revitalizing U.S. Entrepreneurship Act of 2007 (FAIR USE) --, I can't find anything on the US Senate web pages that it was ever passed into law.

3-2-1 Studios was forced to stop selling software that broke encryption, because it is illegal in many countries, as has already been stated. That was the only reason they were forced to stop selling that version of software.

What some company in europe does, and whether it's legal in some of those countries, is irrelevant. The company that pays for and sponsors these boards do not allow the discssions that show users how to break encryption or point them to software that does.

NO, you cannot do that with the Roxio program.

There is no legal way of doing this in the US but the lawyers have been arguing over use rights and DRM for years and probably for many to come.

What are the laws in your country?

3-2-1 Studios was based in Missouri. The following URl gives the history of why they were shut down:
