MyDVD 9 continuously crashes

Skippio

Question

I purchased MyDVD 9 two weeks ago. EVERY time I use it, it CRASHES. As soon as I do something, it crashes. For example, double click on a menu button, & that’s it….it CRASHES. Right-click & “Edit Menu Background”…CRASH! I get the message “Video Wave 9 has encountered a problem…”

My project is a stage show, 2 hours long, with 3 acts, each as a chapter. Imported .avi format saved from Windows Movie Maker.

About 3 months ago I wiped & reinstalled everything on my PC, so it should be fairly clean, along with daily virus scans & updates & spyware sweeps, etc. I talk to the keyboard nicely & give the tower regular hugs. I do everything I can to keep the goddamn computer happy.

Questions:

What are possible causes of MyDVD 9 crashing EVERY time it’s used?

Why does I take 4 minutes to open this programme/a MyDVD project, even when no other applications are running?

When MyDVD finally opens, why does it & everything else move so slowly?

If MyDVD & Video Wave are 2 separate programs, why do I get the message “Video Wave 9 has encountered a problem…” every time MyDVD crashes?

I bought this program less than 2 weeks ago &, like MyDVD LE version 5, it has caused nothing but problems & stress. Apparently, a heap of software/settings/drivers/I don’t know what the h*ll else had to be downloaded with it & it even effects the way your computer starts!!! I don’t like that. That’s like having to walk into your living room backwards just because you bought a new DVD recorder. It should work for me, not me for it.

I also agree with the sentiments of this user

http://forums.support.roxio.com/lofiversio...php/t22473.html

who entitled their thread “Roxio Suite 9 – the system killer”, because it is slowing EVERY other application down – even after I have forced it to quit! What the h*ll is that all about?!! Is this “MyDVD” application a program/virus hybrid?

And this user’s experience is very similar to my own:

http://forums.support.roxio.com/lofiversio...php/t24298.html

It seems the most likely explanation is that MyDVD is a piece of crap.

Any suggestions on how to make this cantankerous, user unfriendly, unreliable program to actually do what it’s supposed to do would be very welcome.

I’ve tried everything from reinstallations to systems analyses to help files (ultra useless) to user forums (very useful) to voodoo chants, sweet talking and physical threats towards the computer. None of the above has worked. Not even a combination of the above has worked. Suggestions from brave souls required.

I’ve implemented as many of your recommendations as I can, but still this program crashes frequently & often moves at a snails pace. Not as bad as before, but certainly not great.

The first few test burns have problems such as poor image quality, audio slightly out of sync, edges appearing/edges being cut off, etc.

Was talking to a guy yesterday with some editing experience & he said I shouldn’t need to shut everything else down to work with video. It seems I have to pander to MyDVD 9.

I haven’t been impressed my Roxio/Sonic/whoever this company is AT ALL since I forked out money for this unstable product. Even if I do eventually create a fault-free DVD, I’ll look around for other programs, as MyDVD is just one thing after another.

Nonetheless, I appreciate very much the time taken by other posters to reply & help me out as it has improved the situation somewhat.

Ok, C drive defragged.

Disabled the watched folders in Media Manager

Used msconfig to uncheck RoxWatch for Start Up.

Repaired MyDVD9 via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs (with Anti-virus & Firewall turned OFF)

DirectX Diagnostic Tool (run after MyDVD repaired)

on the System tab, it says “DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)”

On Display tab: “Drivers: Main Driver ati2dvag.dll. Version: 6.14.0010.6698. Date: June 13 2007.”

You’re saying that should read 7.6, dated June 25, 2007. So does that mean I need to re-install? If I do reinstall, do I have to roll back to Internet Explorer 6 & Windows Media Player 10 because I am using Windows XP?

Quote: “…look at your audio device and see if there are any updates for it.” I don’t know how to do this.

Quote: “…Now is the time to fine tune you graphics card. You can use the control panel for the card to set it to "Bast Performance" rather than "Best Appearance". Make sure you filters are set to application controlled.”

Again, I have no idea how to do this, despite looking it up. I appreciate the time you’re taking to help me out, but you’re speaking at a techno level above mine, although I’m looking up these terms & “how to’s”. Unless I’m given step by step, I’m stranded.

To summarise:

- disabled the watched folders in Media Manager

- used msconfig to stop Roxio Watch at Start Up

- defragged my C drive

- cleared up as much space as possible on C drive

- ran DirectX Diagnostic Tool, but don’t know what to do with it or what it tells me

- repaired MyDVD9 with Anti-virus turned off

- & am going to implement any other recommendations which I can just about understand.

MyDVD 9 is still moving slowly, but not as slowly as before. Still crashing, but not as much.

Thanks.

Try shutting down RoxWatch, and anything else Roxio via msconfig. Also, turn off your Internet Security and virus software, and try opening VideoWave.

And get rid of malware and spyware on your computer, and defrag your hard drive.

Disable the watched folders in Media Manager, it is cataloging every file on your computer using 50 % or more of your CPU for an extended time. When you try to open anything else, the CPU can't handle it.

MyDVD and Video Wave are associated program using a lot of the same processes.

When did you last update your video card drivers and when you did that, did you uninstall the old drivers first (different procedures for updating based on manufacturer. When did you update DirectX 9c?

Make sure that your anti-virus is turned off when you are doing video editing. It may be scanning everything you change. You did turn off your anti-virus when you installed the program didn't you?

Do you have more then one packet writing programs on your computer? These are programs -other then the one in Windows-that allows you to drag files to a formatted disc)

Well that's two of us telling the poster the same thing. Hopefull the poster will try the suggestions.

Thanks for the replies.

Grandpabruce:

I right-clicked the “Media Manager” icon in the blue bar at the bottom of my screen & selected 'stop watching folders'. Is that what you mean by “try shutting down RoxWatch” ?

I didn’t know what “msconfig” was, so looked it up & did your suggestion.

This post

http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?showtopic=457

suggests “The msconfig fix is not a permanent fix, nor is turning off the Watch function.”

This post mentions how to uninstall Roxiotraywatch & media manager

http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?...amp;#entry23254

which I might also do.

I’m wary of turning off security, that doesn’t seem safe? But if I have to, then I presume I should turn off my broadband router & connection to the Internet while working with this program?

I’ll defrag my hard drive.

Sknis:

From reading other posts, this Media Manager seems like a nuisance program, bordering on malicious. I’ll first knock it off on msconfig, & then perhaps remove it, as mentioned above.

Video card Drivers: as far as I know, I did it in the last 2 weeks. I’ve downloaded & upgraded so much to try & get this project done & I’m not very technical, so I don’t know. I didn’t know you had to uninstall the old drivers first, I thought an update was just an update. Anyway, I don’t know how to do that.

DirectX 9c

Don’t know what this jargon is either, but I’ll look it up & try to download it. I don’t know how to check if I actually need to download it, install it, whatever. But I’ll install it anyway...I presume that would be the safest course of action?

I’ll turn off anti-virus & disconnect from the Internet when working with video.

No, I didn’t turn off my anti-virus when I installed MyDVD 9 – why should I? I was downloading the program from the internet – why would you turn off anti-virus & internet security when downloading from it? Is this one of the many twists & turns & double somersaults you have to somehow predict in advance in order to make this program carry out any functions? So if I didn’t have anti-virus off when installing, does that mean I have to uninstall & reinstall?

“Do you have more then one packet writing programs on your computer? These are programs -other then the one in Windows-that allows you to drag files to a formatted disc)”

I’m afraid you’ve lost me totally there. My only guess is that you are asking if I have programs that carry out similar tasks to MyDVD. If so, should I uninstall them? Several programs have overlapping functions/features.

I’ll carry out any of your recommendations which I can understand, & post my results. Thanks.

Have you rebooted and tried using VideoWave?

Also, running your antivirus software, while installing any program, is not a good idea. That may be part of the problem too. You can try turning it off, then do a Repair of EMC through Add/Remove Programs. You need to click on the Change button, not the Remove button.

More. :)

it is OK to keep your anti-virus running while you are downloading. After you download disconnect from the internet and then shut down everything that you don't need running including anti-virus and anti-malware. This best practices for installation of any software. Some programs won't install at all if you have an anti-virus running.

Go to Windows>Start>Run. type in dxdiag > select OK. Wait.

The DirectX program is checking your computer for the version and settings for DirectX, Microsoft uses DirectX to handle all the input from your video and audio devices.

On the window that opens will give you information about the program and will list DirectX 9c. The versions don't seem to change but there are updates you can get from the Microsoft page. Vista, I believes uses Direct X 10. And while I remember, unless you are using Vista, roll back Internet Explorer to version 6 and WMP to version 9 or 10. Those ave been found to screw up the program running in XP.

Now go to the "display" tab. On the left will be the video device and on the right will be the driver number. I believe it should be 7.6 dated June 25, 2007. If that number doesn't match the one your downloaded and installed, then it did not install properly. If the number is correct, you are set to go (almost).

Did you read the installation instructions?

At the same time, you may want to look at your audio device and see if there are any updates for it.

If you do any of the tests, you will pass them all. Anything that won't pass the test means that the computer is really screwed up. You won't have these problems.

Remember above when I said you were almost done? Now is the time to fine tune you graphics card. You can use the control panel for the card to set it to "Bast Performance" rather than "Best Appearance". Make sure you filters are set to application controlled.

Now try.

No, not everyone needs to do the above but you came here with a problem that we are trying to solve. Most people won't ever have to change any of the setting on their video card for this program.
