disc size estimation is incorrect

ncvid

Question

I'm trying to burn a 4.7GB DVD+R movie. The original file is MPEG2, and appears to be compatable (smart rendering works). The file size is 4.505 GB (then I trim about 3 minutes off). I tried to make a DVD with menus. MyDVD estimates the project size to be 4393 MB, with 306 MB free. I burn to image or folder set, but the iso file and the folders total size is over 5.08MB. I then tried to make a DVD with no menus. Same problem, too large for DVD+R.

VW7 used to overestimate the disc size. I would often get estimates of 4.8GB, but the resulting iso was smaller, and nero would burn the discs fine. It appears that EMC9 underestimates the final project size. Does anyone have advice on how to make this disc, it should fit?

I'm not having much luck with re-rendering files to fit disc; causes a reboot. I've had the same reboot when trying to use disc copy to make the folder set smaller. At the moment, EMC9 is not happy with my video drivers (it complains that my drivers are not up to date, but I believe that they are the most recent compatable drivers for my card)

Go ahead and burn the file to ISO then use Disc Copier to burn to disc. Disc Copier should transcode the file to fit to disc at the best possible quality. I've burned ISO's to disc as large as 7.5GB with acceptable quality. 5.05gb should not be a problem.

Thanks for the reply, Paul. I tried almost what you said to do. I burned the project to disc in folders rather than ISO. Then I used Disc copy to burn onto a 4.7 GB DVD+R; I got another coaster. No PC or DVD player would recognize anything on the disc.

Then I tried to burn the folders to an 8.5 GB DVD+R using Disc Copy. Obviously, no further compression was needed to make it fit. The disc is playable, however, the resulting disc had jerky video; a more expensive coaster.

The jerky video may have been an issue in the files, because when I played the .vob files from the folders, in PowerDVD, it was jerky too.

Small progress; still trying.
