Go to Nvidia's site and download an updated driver for your video card. Follow their install directions about uninstalling the old one, reboot, install the new.

I went to the NVidia.com site.

I chose download drivers - Options are:

Graphics Driver - Geforce FX Series - Windows XP / 2000

I downloaded it but did not run it.

The uninstall instructions did not find on the the site or under FAQ/Troubleshoot so try'd this:

+Control Panel - Administration Tools - Computer Management - Device Manager - Display Adapters - Right clicked on NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500 - UNINSTALL - YES ALL

+Than I rebooted

+Than I installed the new driver (Afterwards asked for reboot)

+I went to device manager where I uninstalled it but this time Driver Properties - Same Version Number and Date

Treid the Roxio again, still did not work... Any other Suggestions... My current settings are the same (going to repost for les confusing)

Don't know why Nvidia hasn't updated the link to take you to the 94.24 driver. Your card is listed as supported for that newer one. Just use the link I included and downlioad the 94.24 driver. Just follow the install hints, uninstall the old one thru Add/Remove programs, reboot, then install the new one.

+ Turned off all anti-virus

+ Went to link downloaded it (Save)

+ Removed my graphics driver by using add/remove

+ Rebooted

+ Atttempted installation of the driver you provided got a error message "This driver does not support your hardware now exiting"

By the way not sure if it means anything:

I been instructed to download 93.71 version by using the steps above in my 2nd reply.

You had me install the 94.24 version

Yoeah I know I linked you to the 94.24 one, because that one lists your card as being compatible with that driver, so I don;t know why it doesn't install exactly. You can just reinstall the 93.71 then, or go back to their site and download and try one of the older ones. Before the 94.24 one, I had the best success using the 77.72 one.

+ I Attempted installation of the 93.71 again

+ Rebooted

+ Upon reboot I am getting a blank black/dark dark grey screen

+ I have attempted forced restart 3 times already

Going to try to go into Safe Mode + Restore

System restore complete....

I have the following files under C:\ believe this means I don't have to go to website to download them all.

C: - NVIDIA - Win2KXP:

77.77

81.94

93.71

92.24

that seemed confusing. these are folders with files in them and 1 file "Setup" jumps out at me but looks like a normal program has aot of files in there (It's not just the installation.exe file)

Can you link me the link for your 77.72 please?

+ Ok, I have downloaded

(Since i still did not have any drivers installed currently)

+ I installed the 77.72

+ Asked for a reboot

+ Back to the dark gray screen.... attempting system recovery - again...

anyway this would constitute a refund I don't think this is going to work? I been going at this for 4 days now..

I am on my laptop now, system recovery doesn't seem to be working (It works but reboots still getting dark gray screen) Trying it couple more times (4 times now different dates) if this doesn't work might have to do a recovery....

would this constitute a not satisfied and get a refund?

You shouldn't need to use system recovery. You should be able to just boot in to Safe Mode and uininstall the drivers from there.

I have no idea why you'd be getting a gray screen. the drivers I pointed you too are the XP 32 bit ones. You could always get ones from HP's site. Should be the same, but who knows, maybe they've done something proprietary.

For refund info, you'd have to contact Roxio/Sonic as we're just users here like you are that try to help each other out.

I have booted in safe mode and all drivers still off the computer but now the gray screen..

I attempted restore and failed every restore point I have..

I now have to recover my PC and reinstall windows now..

b/c I cannot even get to the desktop without gray screen (Safe mode but nothing to do there except restore - and that failed)

Installing/uninstalling video drivers should not cause what you are seeing to happen at all, so I'm at a loss as to what's going on. The only thing I can think of to try, would be to shut down the pc, then reseat the video card. If that doesn't change things, it could be you've got hardware issues with your MB or Video card. I'm not sure doing the "HP system recovery" is going to help either, but you could try it.
