Permission to copy?

ERay

Question

All of a sudden DVD9 won't transcode my recorded TV files. Transcode window says "Unable to open file for transcoding. You may not have permission to copy this file." No problems in the past. Can anyone tell me what happened??

TV recorded in Windows Media Center (DVR-MS format) at "Better" quality. File shows "Protected: No"

Thanks

It's been more than a month since the original poster posted about his problem and he has not come back to discuss whether he fixed the problem are not. It's hard to know if the problem is copy protection or not. You might want to contact your cable/satellite provider and ask if they know anything about this.

Sorry, have been out of touch for awhile.

The movies were recorded from AMC cable using WinXP Media Center. The info on the movie In Media Center shows the movie as being "Copy Protected". Further checking indicated that these movies can be recorded and then played on the recorded device but cannot be further copied.

It's the only cable TV channel that this happens on.

I have both a Media Center PC (Vista) and an XP with GBPVR to record tv and at times I can record the same program on both (SciFi Channel) and get the protected content message on the Media Center but not on the XP system.

I feel it's something we need to get use to since even the 'free' tv channels are selling season dvd's as soon as the season is over. They can't have you recording them otherwise you won't buy them! Funny thing is, the DVR's rented by cable systems allow you to record them but going further than recording is getting harder and harder.

Couple of possibilities

Are you logged in as administrator with full 'rights'

Is the material downloaded (and as such Media Player may be stepping in with DRM)

Also - check the attributes and clear them if necessary (read-only, hidden, etc)

Almost sounds like a broadcast flag problem but that was knocked down in the Court of Appeals. You might want to call you cable or satellite provider and ask questions. Are you running Vista?

I have the exact same problem that happened to me today, except I have been recording the same shows from an Adultswim analog TV signal for over a month using Windows Media Center at "best" quality: Fullmetal Alchemist and InuYasha (I admit, I'm an anime freak). The attributes are clear regarding read-only and hidden, and the file is not protected. I have had zero problems previously converting from dvr-ms to mpeg files, until now. I do not have administrative priveleges set up on my computer, and I am still able to convert my other dvr-ms files to mpeg.

Running XP Media Center Edition SP2 and IE7 for 2 months on Dell XPS 410 with duo core 2.13 GHz processors, 3 GB RAM, Norton Internet Security 2006/Antivirus, Webroot Spysweeper.

Any help greatly appreciated!

Beerman and gi7omy

Thank you for your help and comments. I guess we will have just to live with it. I don't think I have ever had that problem with VCR recordings. But then again, I have never attempted to "copy" a VCR recording.

In follow up for my problem with transcoding, I ended up not being able to transcode any of my Media Center files as time went on. I then could only play the raw files on MWP with video and no sound. I eventually sucked it up--did a complete uninstall of EMC 9 and installed the NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder Platinum (have GeForce 7900 series graphics chip). Life is now grand, no problem-o. Probably was not a copy protection issue. Only took me 3-4 f@*%#^! weeks to figure it out.

Thanks for your reply but believe this problem has to do with copy protection and the rules for the US and Irland are probably not the same. This was a movie (The Godfather) that was televised on AMC cable channel. I recorded the movie in Windows Media Center and was going to edit out the commercials and burn it to a DVD using DVD9. It is logical to assume that the broadcast was sent copy protected except for playing on the capture device (my computer and recordering program with the DVD player included).. DVD9 can't or won't copy the file to transcode it from DVR-MS format to MPG format for editing. I might add that Windows Media Player wouldn't play it either as the DVR-MS file was probably copy protected.

My next step is to tape the same movie when repeated on a VCR and see if it can be copied to DVD format.

I have not had the problem with other cable TV channels and it appears that just AMC is involved.

Again, thanks for your reply.
