Hum and noise

buhtwheat

Question

I hope I'm posting this in the right forum. I have a PPC Mac Mini, and I have been trying to copy some LPs to CD via Spin Doctor. I am using a Griffith iMic for an interface. I originally ran a 20'patch cord from my receiver to my computer. This resulted in noise and hum. So next, I plugged my receiver and turntable into the same power supply as my computer. Still noise and hum. So lastly, I moved the receiver to my computer desk, and was able to use a 3' patch cord. Still noisy!!! I have copied some cassette tapes using the iMic, and didn't notice this problem. Does anybody have any ideas? Do I need a better interface? A ground lift? A hammer?

Most turntables have a ground wire that connects to the receiver to eliminate that hum. I suppose you also tried reversing the turntable's AC plug (if possible).

Since you have the Griffin iMic you might try using Final Vinyl which lets you connect the turntable directly to the iMic. After creating the AIFF file with Final Vinyl you can open it in Spin Doctor for its filtering.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for reminding me about Final Vinyl!!! I had tried to download it several months ago, but experienced difficulties, and eventually forgot about it. I am going to try it one evening this week and see if it works. Thanks again!!
