burning problem in VideoWave

lynnie64

Question

I am new to creator 9 so am really just getting this thing figured out. I finally got a slideshow made -just photos with music in the background - and I can not seem to get it to burn.

First of all....does it have to be put on a DVD-R disk or will a CD-R disk work? I have tried both and they tell me that the "drive is empty" even when it isn't. I finally was able to click "burn" with the DVD-R in the CD drive and it went through the copying proccess with the bars showing the progress for about 20 minutes. Thought I finally got it to work!

But when I tried to play the disk....NOTHING. It will not play in either drive and just acts as if it is a blank disk. I know it isn't, but it won't play.

What am I doing wrong? I checked for updates to my drivers and it says there are none. Do I need to format the disk first? If so, how do I do that?

I also need this disk to be able to play in my families computers, most of which only have a CD drive. Is this possible? I'm worried if I put it on a DVD, then it won't play on their computer. Will it?

ANY help anyone can give me would be so much apprieciated. I am on my 2nd FULL day of trying to make one simple slideshow....I am getting just completely frustrated. :(

Thanks so much for ANY help!

Did you examine the burned disc with Explorer? You should see an AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder if it was a DVD. If it was a VCD/SVCD it would look like this:

When you click the DVD icon in VW, MyDVD Express comes up. In Express you select the Disc Format you want, before you attempt to burn:

VCD & SVCD will produce different disc structures, as I illustrated above.

Most PC's will not know how to play them anymore as this type of disc is fast going the way of the floppy disc… If they use WMP and point it to the MPEGAV folder then the AVSEQ01 file, it should work for them.

Hi James,

Thanks for the info. I didn't check what it said regarding the burned DVD. Actually, I was so mad at it at that point I just threw it away because it wouldn't play in anything.

I did notice the feature in VW when you have the option of what format you want in MyDVD. The problem was....I didn't know what the options meant. I chose "DVD" because I didn't know what the others were. What do VCD and SVCD stand for and which one is it I would want to use to burn and so it will also play back on a computer?

If you could let me know which one I should use, that would be great. Maybe because I had "DVD" chosen as the format that is why I couldn't get it to work? Also, If I chose one of the other formats (VCD or SVCD)....do I use a DVD-R or a CD-R disk and which drive should I put it in when burning?

Thanks SO much for your help! :D I am really wanting to finish this project today! After 3 days of messing with it....I am ready!!!!! I will be so excited if I can get this to work!

Best Regards,

Lynne

Lynne, a VCD (Video CD) is similar to a SVCD (Super Video CD). Both will play in a computer but some standalone players will play an SVCD which is of better quality. I've only tried a few VCD with Roxio and have never been impressed enough to try more. The quality just is not there.

I think for the purposes of getting you started, you might want to stick with dvd's for now until you are more comfortable with EMC 9.

So, my suggestion is to use MyDVD and burn your project to an image file instead of direct to disc. The resulting ISO (image file) can then be burned directly to a dvd with Disc Copier. I like this process because I can check my final project before burning to a disc. However, if your problem is the burning part, then we need to figure out why the dvd can't be burned.

It might be helpful is you can post your computer information so that we can see what type of hardware you're working with.

Me again,

I just realized that I was using DVD+R not DVD-R. I went to Office Max and he said if I am using an older computer (my Dell is maybe 6 years old?) he said that is probably my problem. Soooo....I just bought a package of DVD-Rs and tried to burn my video once again.

STILL nothing. Either drive I put it in says it is either not a compatible disk or something like that, or usually will just tell me that the "drive is empty" when it's not.

ANY ideas guys??? I tried saving the image and burning it via disk copier....still the same problems. It does the exact same thing as when I try to burn from VideoWave.

Help..... :(

Your system should be able to do what you want but you only have 512MB of ram which, for video work, is not much.

When you burn the image file, does it play OK? You can view the image file in Roxio but I suggest you download a nifty media player called VLC Media Player. It'll play just about anything and takes very little space. Just drag and drop your ISO into it and see if it plays ok. If it does, then we can concentrate on the burning side of things.

I can view the file (the entire slideshow with music) in VideoWave and in MyDVD where you push play under the Preview area. It plays straight through with no problems, so I THINK I am okay there. It seems like the file is definitely there, it just won't burn. Do you still think I should download the media player and double check?

I just checked to make sure. I have the image file saved about 6 times (beings I was messing around with it so much!), and it does play just fine when I double-click on the file. It opens it up in Roxio and will play the entire slideshow.

Soooo....think we are just dealing with a burning issue.

You did check for firmware updates for the burner, right? Dell's site should have the info you need for your system.

Have you burned anything else in another program to make sure the burner is OK? Try doing a simple audio cd and make sure if burns ok.

I went to the site that Roxio had to check for driver updates. There was none for my NEC or the Samsung drive. I did try the burner yesterday to burn the 4 songs that I needed for my music. So, that seems to be okay. I also went seperately to the NEC update site and Samsung site and couldn't find any updates. Maybe I'll try Dell just for kicks and giggles though.

But I think the burner...at least the CD-ROM drive is working okay. By the way, when I do finally get this to work....do I put the disk in the DVD drive or the CD drive? Neither will work at this point, but if I know it will at least save me the hassle of trying both.

Thanks again Paul. If you get this figured out for me, I am going to have to send you a case of beer!!!! ;)

I don't think a firmware upgrade is going to help any. Based on the 2 drives you've listed above, the only burner you have is a CD burner (the NEC CD-RW NR-9100A ). The Samsung you listed ( SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616T ), based on this info on Dell's site, id only a DVD reader, menaing it will read (play) dvd's, but cannot burn dvd's. So in order to burn a DVD disc, you'll need to get a DVD burner.

I completely missed that Larry----good catch.

So Lynne, since you don't have a dvd burner, we're back to you only being able to burn a VCD or SVCD onto a CD disc. However, haven't you tried a VCD already and you couldn't get that to work either?

Wow....that explains the DVD problem! Thank you Larry!

I tried the CD drive, but I think I may have been trying to do the DVD since at that time I didn't know what the VCD or SVCD meant until you told me.

So, if I put a CD-R disk in the CD-Rom drive and choose SVCD, then maybe that will work? Before when I put a CD-R disk in, it said it wasn't right, but perhaps I was on DVD. Should I give the SVCD a try?

Hey....guess what?! IT WORKED, IT WORKED, IT WORKED!!!!!!!!! :D

I just needed to choose SVCD and then put a CD-R in the CD drive......an it worked!!!!!!!!

Thank you SOOOO much to you Paul & Larry & James too....you guys figured this out for me and I am so very thankful to you!!!!! You guys are AWESOME! :D:D:D

Glad it worked and I'm really sorry I didn't see what Larry saw the first time even with my glasses on! Since I doubt you will be satisfied with the quality of some VCD/SVCD's, you might want to look at buying a dvd burner. However, with your system getting old and IMO, low on RAM, you may want to take advantage of some of the back to school computer specials and update everything. It's just my simple opinion but if you get the DVD bug, your system may really slow you down and make the experience miserable.

Happy to hear you got it worked out. :)

I agree with Paul's suggestion on the DVD burner also.

I think I tend to agree with you both. I know I want a bigger monitor, so I know as my system gets older it would make sense to just get a whole new system. It is probably time.

But at least I did finally just get a SVCD version of my slideshow, which is much improvement over where I was before you guys helped me out!

Thanks so much again to you both! :)

Best Regards,

Lynne
