grandpabruce
I went to explorer and could not figure out how to change the extension....any help!!!! Thanks a ton! Don Windows hides known file extensions by default, so you have to make them visible. Go to My Computer/Tools/Folder Options, click on View, scroll down to where you see Hide extensions for known file types, and click in the circle to the left of it, so the dot, is gone. While you are there, right above that, click in the circle to the left of Show hidden Files and folders, and click Click on Apply, then Ok. You should now be able to change the extension of your files, as described in the other posts.
Zorg
I searched for batch renaming utilities because WinXP is so time consuming. You can use the WinXP DOS command window and use the following command: ren *.mod *.mpg It works fast but you'll have to manually navigate to each video file directory with the cd command. I found a fairly good totally free batch renamer utility on About.com called: Renamer v6.0 final by Albert Bertilsson It's extra fast and simple, but you'll need these special instructions: (1) On the "A" line enter the top level directory of all of your movie files. You can browse there using the folder icon. (2) On the "B" line, enter *.mod (3) Check all three check boxes for Files, Dirs, and Recurse (this utility was written by a gifted techno-geek) (4) Press the Scan button. The list of old and new files in the main window is updated...but not actually updated on your hard drive...yet. (5) Choose the File > Rename menu option. The renaming operation is performed. The latest version of my free Panasonic Video Software automatically recognizes and imports the .MOD files, but it is so slow and doesn't result in .mpg extensions. Given that Panasonic and JVC are both using .MOD files, I can't believe that Roxio doesn't automatically support this file extension yet. Maybe in a patch???? (PLEASE!) Best of luck

ggrussell
Unfortunately, JVC is doing some weird things and the files are not a standard MPEG file - especially when recording to 16:9 widescreen format. Renaming a MOD 4:3 file usually works with no problem, but 16:9 will not.
