Device code 10 error

Big_Dave

Question

I am getting a device code 10 error which results in my DVD/CD drives to become unavailable. :( I uninstalled the drivers and rebooted but nogo. Since I have two copies of ROXIO I checked the device filters on my working PC and found the lower filter to indicate: Px20HELP DRVMCB DLACDBHM

On the code 10 error PC the lower filter indicates: DRVMCB DLACDBHM

Is Px20HELP needed? I am also wondering if DivX is trying to initialize two drivers, one Roxio and the other from?

Any ideas?

I got the PxHELP20 back in the registry by deleting all of Roxio and DivX. The registry now looks like the one in my other PC that is working OK. However, that still didn't solve the device code 10 error (no DVD and CD drives appear in my computer). Device manager still shows the yellow exclamation point. Something is causing the conflict. I have a couple of other software products that are likely candidates and I may uninstall those and see what happens.

I uninstalled the drivers and rebooted but nogo.

What drivers did you uninstall and from where?

Another approach for unrecognised drives is to delete Upper and LowerFilter values,

This has fixed it for most folks even with error device code 10.

The DVD and CD drivers marked in yellow my the device manager were the ones that I uninstalled. I mentioned deleted by mistake. Windows did the rediscovery after reboot but I ended up with error code 10 for the DVD and CD drives.

I now have deleted out the lower and upper device filters and I no longer have error code 10. This is good! :D However, I have 3 or more pieces of software to reinstall. :glare: I hope this problem doesn't come back after I reinstall all of the software (EMC 9, PowerDVD, iTunes,etc...)

My thanks goes to jeanrosenfeld!!!

Well the problem came back without Roxio EMC 9 even installed on my desktop PC after another complete HD rebuild. The only way to get the DVD drives back was to run a registry patch that I found on the MS Community BB. The end result is everything is working except iTunes on my desktop PC. iTunes may be setting up the problem (time bomb) and when some other software installation comes along then "poof" the DVD drives disappear.

I am not totally sure what is the root cause of the problem but iTunes seems to be the one that must be removed once the problem is tripped. And, it has to stay removed or no DVD drives.

OPS I spoke too soon. After I installed iTunes 7.3.1 things still looked good until I rebooted. Device error code 10 came back. :angry2: However, I do have the same iTunes running on my other PC. Something is still causing a problem. :(

I may have to use brute force and rebuild the hard drive. It's getting very ugly. Or, live without iTunes.

There was a problem with iTunes and EMC suites, back to the EMC 7/7.5 and iTunes 5 days. There are options for both EMC and iTunes. Instead of iTunes, try Napster. :)

If you really have the need to download low grade versions of music, iTunes is the last one that you should use. There are a multitude of legal download sites out there that won't foul up your computer.

itunes and Real Player, number ten gi!

cd

LOL. I had Real Player on my computer, when I first got a dial-up internet connection, back in 1997. It stayed on my computer through 2 reboots. I then noticed that it tried to take control of the computer. I got rid of it, and never looked back.:lol:

While surfing the web, about 3 years ago, I noticed the problems that folks were having with iTunes, version 5. It wasn't just the Roxio programs. I made the wise decision of not dowloading it then, and don't have it now.

If your up to it put itunes on first then EMC 9 and see what happens. I wouldn't worry about PowerDVD 5,6,7, I have never heard a peep out of them.

Another option a different version of itunes.

A few posts back I asked you about deleting drivers. You said you uninstalled the drives. Next time uninstall the IDE channel the drives are on and reboot.

I uninstalled the IDE channel that the drives are on and rebooted twice. NO GO! :( Same device code 10 error.

I may try the brute force method tomorrow. That would be to wipe the HD and reinstall everytime. It's an ugly approach but I think it will work. Strange though, everything works together on my laptop although it has only one DVD-CD drive where as my desktop has two.

My approach would be to

i) export the key with the LowerFilter value as is, for backup.

ii) Modify the Lower filter value to include Px20Help in the right order)

restart the PC and test.

Another approach for unrecognised drives is to delete Upper and LowerFilter values, restart the PC.

On my PC with Roxio EMC 9.1 de luuxe I have the LowerFilter value for DVD/CD ROM drives set as you show for your working PC.
