Help please - squashed images

anything

Question

Hello please can you help?

I am using Final Cut Pro 5 to make films and Roxio Toast Titanium 6 to embed the films onto DVD for viewing

The films are the right proportions on FCP but when I burn them to DVD and play them, they are squashed and turned into widescreen.

This has happened to me once before when I used an apple powerbook, it was resolved by doing something simple but it has now happened again since transferring my toast software over to a Macbook.

What can I do to get the images to look right on the DVD version of the outptted film? I need to know very soon as I have to go to do a workshop for someone.... it is coming out as widescreen for now apparent reason. As if Roxio is turning it into NTSC rather than PAL

Thank you!!

Robert

I cannot work out how to use iDVD......

Pre progarammed menus appear whch I do not want and when I try to burn the DVD nothing happens

Is My DVD edit part of iDVD?

How do I change permissions for the folder's content and what is the IFO?

Too may questions, I know, which is why I just want toast 6 to work again like it used to!

I would have thought that if I was doing something wrong with the export from FCP it would look squahed *before* going into toast, no?

Toast has written the incorrect aspect ratio instruction in the VIDEO_TS folder's IFO file. The video isn't actually squished on the disc: it just plays back that way because the DVD player is told the video is 16:9 rather than 4:3. I don't know why Toast did that but I suspect it there is something in the FCP export that is fooling Toast.

MyDVDEdit is a donation-ware application that allows editing of various parameters inside a VIDEO_TS folder. Google for where you can download it. Here are the steps to using it for your purpose:

1. Copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD to your hard drive. Select the VIDEO_TS folder and choose Get Info from the File menu. Change Permissions to Read & Write. Click the arrow next to Details and click the button "Apply to enclosed items." Close the Get Info window.

2. Open MyDVDEdit and choose Open... from the File menu to select the VIDEO_TS folder. In the top left of the window you will see one or more VTS titles. Select one and click the IFO button that's below the video viewer window. Now click the button next to Aspect ratio and choose 4:3. Do the same for any other VTS titles. Save the file. Quit MyDVDEdit.

3. You can preview that it is all working by opening DVD Player and choosing Open DVD Media from the File menu to select the VIDEO_TS folder. If everything is fixed burn a new DVD using the DVD video from VIDEO_TS setting in the Toast Video window.

Hi Tsantee

I eventually sorted this by changing the sequence settings in FCP, before having to disappear for a fortnight.

So thanks anyway.

However I have just made a half an hour long film and when I try to burn it in Toast I am getting this-

Interface error - 50, the connection is not stable

The drive reported an error

Sense key = illegal request

Sense code = 0 x 30, 0 x 05

Cannot write medium - incompatible format

Any ideas?

Could it have anything to do with the fact that most of it is DV PAL but some small parts of it is shot by an HD camera and is widescreen?

Thanks.... R

That error message is produced by your optical drive because it can't burn to that disc. Some things to try are a) a different brand of media or using DVD-R if you were using DVD+R (or vice versa); B) seeing if a firmware update is available for your drive; and c) choosing Save as Disc Image from the File menu and then burning that disc image to DVD using the Image File setting in the Copy window.

If you are using Quicktime 7.2 I don't know if it also may have a compatibility issue with Toast 6.1.1. A lot has changed in QuickTime and Toast 6 hasn't been (and won't be) updated. I don't recommend using a version of QT later than 7.1.2 with Toast 6 but I've done no testing to determine if there is any problem with 7.2.

Hmmmm.

Let's try another workaround. Google for DVDImager (freeware) and download it. Use DVD Imager to make a disc image containing the VIDEO_TS folder. Then burn that disc image to DVD using the Image File setting in the Toast Copy window.

This was really helpful but there is a problem - in Step one when I click the arrow next to Details there is no button saying "apply to enclosed items" (at least none tht I can see - where is it?) This means although I can open the VIDEO_TS folder in MyDVDedit, it reads "some of the files are read only - you wll not be able to save chages". This means that although I can sucessfully change the aspect ratio to 4:3 on the VTS titles, when I try to save the change, the save option from the file menu is grayed out.

Any suggestions please? Thanks

Forget that, I have just minimised the get info window window and discovered "apply to enclosed items"

The Apply to Enclosed Items button is at the very bottom of the Get Info window when Details is expanded. Maybe this is added with OS !0.4 because it's there on my Mac. In any case just select the IFO file in the VIDEO_TS folder and change its permissions to Read & Write. Then you'll be able to save the changes in MyDVDEdit.

OK, it was all going really fine and everything was looking fixed as 4:3 in the new VIDEO_TS FOLDER until I tried to burn to DVD and it read: " interface error - 50 the connection is not stable the drive reported an error sense key = illegal request sense code = 0 x 30, 0 x 5 CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATABLE FORMAT couldn't set up the track for writing"

Any ideas pls?

Toast 6 isn't the best choice. I had trouble with aspect ratios from different sources. Is there a reason you aren't using iDVD instead of Toast 6.

There is a way to fix the content of the disc using MyDVDEdit. It involves copying the VIDEO_TS folder to the hard drive, changing permissions for the folder's content, opening it with MyDVDEdit and changing the IFO to set the aspect ratio to 4:3.

Some other thoughts: Maybe there is something you are doing with the FCP export that is telling Toast this is a widescreen video. Check Apple's knowledgebase or the FCP forum at discussions.apple.com to learn if there is a setting you need to change. Also, consider getting Toast 7 or 8 because those have custom settings for forcing the aspect ratio.
