Roxio EMC 9.1, Vista x64 and Gathering Information Problem

avatarl

Question

Ok, so I bought EMC 9.1 yesterday and managed (after some time) to install it. It seems ok except this: Every time I launch the Suite Home, it goes through a sequence of "preparing Roxio 9 - gathering information" messages, like it's trying to install something. Then after 10-20 such messages (which go for some minutes) it eventually loads.

I have EMC 9.1 clean installed as per the instructions on the forum. Should I try uninstalling and reinstalling again or can this problem be fixed otherwise?

Well, the install cd doesn't even mention autorun, I just browsed and ran setup. Anyway, I'll have Roxio Home run with admin privileges. Thanks for the help.

But you might want to report that the 9.1 CD doesn't behave as it should.

That's the first time anyone has said that autorun failed which makes me think that something on your system is actually stopping autorun. It always has been an option on Windows from way back to 'kill' autorun when a CD is inserted

Well, when I insert CDs one of the 2 will happen. Either I'll see the setup as one of the options of the Autoplay thing (which I didn't) or (usually in pre-Vista CDs), setup.exe will try to autorun and trigger UAC response. Roxio 9.1 presents the autoplay menu but setup isn't there. I had to scroll in and run it.

It seems like something did not complete in the install. I would try a repair install first before I went thru the uninstall routine. If that doesn't work, I would then uninstall.

I had the same problem installing on my x64 system. I unistalled and reinstalled, and that did seem to fix it. Although I will say the first maybe two or three times I used emc, it would eat up my processors. I have the gadget that shows pc activity, and both of my cores were maxed out for maybe 2 hours the first time, and only 10 minutes or so the next one or two times. I guess it was "indexing my media" But after that it has been working pretty well for me. Every once in a while I get the video wave has stopped responding, and the time it takes to convert video is kinda long, but as a whole once I got over the initial install it seems to be working pretty well

Well, I just finished the clean uninstall/install. Nope, no difference. Although if I leave the Roxio CD in, it's worse. It runs through the same process, then states on multiple occurences that it needs to update some files and if it does, it must reboot. If I do that, next time I try to open Roxio, it goes through the same sequence.

I'm at a loss. What sort of broken installation program is that? I'm certain unistalling through Add/Remove Programs just removes the entry and nothing more as most files were intact when I was moving through the clean uninstall/install steps. And it always reports that a number of products need to be uninstalled for the new versions just before it starts installation.

Ok, I have some news... I had Roxio run with admin rights and it loaded without any messages... Eh... Should a program like that run with admin rights to function correctly?

And there's another question I have. My 9.1 CD didn't even mention that there's a setup.exe waiting to run or something. I had to go in the CD, execute that and continue through UAC.

It does require to be installed as Admin (in common with a lot of other programs)

UAC - most of the regulars here who use Vista tend to turn that off (it's far too 'hand-holding')

The program CD should install from autorun (unless that was disabled) but the content CD does require to be run manually (I know it doesn't say that anywhere but it's something we all found out)
