Two AVI Files with one Audio

BillyB

Question

I video taped a wedding with two camcorders to get different perspectives. How do I go about creating a production that switches back and forth from one "view" to another using the 2 avi files while at the same time using just a single audio file?

See below. I added 3 overlays. The overlay covers the entire frame by default so you won't 'see' what is in the main track. You can make that a picture in picture by shrinking the overlay. See attachment 2.

How do you set the preview screen to see the "settings" on the right side of the screen, and for the overlays to show up in the production timeline? I added an overlay, but the track is grayed-out instead of tan like the video track and I can't see it in the timeline.

You must be using a screen resolution higher than 1024X768. Then View/Settings. The select View again and DOCK SETTINGS shoud be available.

When you add a file as an overlay, you should get a dialog box asking you what to do with the file. Select 'Insert as overlay'. Depending on where the BLUE LINE is located, the file should be inserted in the first available overlay track. You have a total of 5 overlay tracks available.

Since you are adding your own file, you use the ADD Image/Video. Not the 'Add Overlay' - those are predesigned images or videos only.

Thanks for all the info. Unfortunately, I'm still having trouble. A soon as I set the start and end points for the first overlay, I get unstable audio playback on the native track. If I undo may changes, the native audio plays fine. I'm using EMC9. Should I maybe try to trim the videos I want to use as overlays externally, save them to separate video files, then add them individually as overlays? Just a thought.

Place the file with the audio you want to use on the main track. Add the second file to the overlay and mute the audio.

How do I set multiple start/end points on the overlay video? I also can't seem to trim the overlay.

Synchronizing the two videos was a trial and error process. Basically, I used the audio from both tracks to synch them up (they were both recording a wedding simultaneously from two different vantage points). I used a color panel in front of the main video track to align it with the overlay track. I then hit the play button and listened to both. I was hoping to compare the native audio track to the internal audio track of the overlay, but couldn't figure out how to view the overlay audio track. Sooo, I kept tweaking the duration of the color panel until both audio tracks (and, thus, videos) were in synch. I then muted the audio track on the overlay.

If anyone knows of a better approach, please advise!

Thanks, I'm going to try it your way. In the future, I'm going to use a director's clapboard to make things easier.

Not sure what you mean for the first question. You can have several clips on one overlay track.

To trim, Zoom in first. Move the mouse over the end or beginning of the clip. Cursor will change to arrows. Click n hold. Then drag inward. Only way that I know.

That worked fine. Thanks. Now I'm able to see the overlay clip in the timeline view.

For future reference, what is the purpose of "add overlay to internal track." This is what I used first, and the overlay disappeared when I changed to timeline view.

I guess I'm still confused on how to switch back and forth between the main video track and the overlay video. How do I make the overlay completely disappear for a length of time, reappear, then disappear again, over and over throughout the production.

You have to place the overlay video in the Overlay track as many times you need it to appear in the entire production. You have to determine the various points of time that you want the clip to begin.

Before trying that, I tried splitting the overlay multiple times (instead of trimming). That seems to work. Wherever I want the main video track to display, I simply delete the section of the split overlay. No native audio problems either! Thanks for the help.

When you have added the second video multiple times as an overlay, you will need to trim its start and end points on each instance, so that each just shows the bit you want at that point. As it is not obvious how to trim an overlay, I include a pic.

In fact you may find it easier to add/trim one overlay, then add/trim the second instance, etc.
