Where are my video files in Media Manager?

NoLaLady

Question

HI. My #1 problem is still a confusion of where/what files are where/what. I bought what I thought was version 9 of everything. The Icon properties says MY DVD 9 Studio Premier. Is that different from 'Deluxe'? Several projects I have been working on are labeled My DVD 8 projects, altho I used this version to create them. The last version I had was MyDVD 6 (which was trashed when I had to reinstall OS). Before I bought this thing I installed Cannon software for both a DVD camcorder and a Cannon digital point&shoot. I think Cannon stuff was 7. I bought this big external drive to keep video files on and probably messed up some things because I had to move them back & forth in order to reconfigure drive which was FAT32. I would LOVE to use Media Manager to locate things. All the photos and music are there but only one ancient little avi file shows up under My Videos. I have some big avi files, mpg, DVD, Windows MM etc files and none of these appear under My Video. Projects show up under My Projects. But I have to write down were the old avi files are that I want to split up into DVDs. Can you see any clues from the above why these are not recognized in My Videos view? And is it possible to uninstall all the Cannon files? I can do everything I need to do within the EMC9 program, don't need special Cannon software. Can I uninstall and re-install without losing my few completed projects? Is this problem discussed anywhere else on this lovely big site or was I just too lazy to find it?

I am myself replying to my own post above. I found the advice re: 1. Unstalling previous Roxio and 2. There IS a difference between what I have and 'Deluxe'. I think (please correct me if necessary). I ought to buy the CD of 'Deluxe' (if such a think exists - I always download). and then get Dell, whom I pay to walk me thru software I'm scared of, to help me with this 'clean install' thing. I don't touch the registry. Is this advisable or am I misinterpreting what I just read?

Sonic Solutions bought Roxio a couple of years ago, Roxio is now Sonic Solutions non-commercial products group. Products now under the Sonic Solutions name are those for the professional. (There is still a little cross naming.)

That is your decision to make. If you have MyDVD and Video Wave and all you want to do is to edit videos, make slide shows and burn them to disk, then you have all you need. IF you want any audio application or back up applications, then you might want to consider EMC 9 for that price. Here is a screen shot of the EMC 9 (deluxe) home application page. You can see what there is Vs what you have. The names are pretty self explanatory.

If you have time to play around and want to see most of the applications in EMC 9, there is another forum for EMC 9 trail version, go to general. You can download a 30 day free trial. The applications that are missing are those that would either conflict with your current programs (Like Drag 2 Disc) or are the extras like Sight Speed. If you can get EMC 9 on sale for $50, is there a reduced price for EMC 9 Deluxe? Id so , consider it.

UGH sarcasm; BTW, not betters; just more experienced with some programs.

Thanks for the solid, very useful reply. :) ( I didn't start the sarcasm.) Everything I do is for my own use or to give to family and friends; I have no professional ambitions. Roxio offered me the $50 price because I had already upgraded to the other thing, which is not named EMC 9 - it's called Roxio MY DVD 9 Studio Premier and has version 9 apps in it. This is what I do with audio: manage music with Windows Media Player and the audio conversion program in Windows Plus. I burn CD's to my computer and listen at home from there. (Sirius Radio takes care of 50% of my music listening, which is mostly opera, classical, broadway and jazz. I don't download songs; I buy or borrow CDs). I also record play-scripts to help memorize. I record on my little hand recorder, convert it to digital and burn to a CD for my car. I would like to skp the first step. I also want to add narration to my DVD's and have not begun to explore that yet. Are the audio programs in EMC 9 easier for these purposes? I'll be happy with what I have unless my audio needs can be better taken care of with EMC 9.

If you have vinyl LP records, you might want to consider transferring those to CD. For that the apps in EMC 9 deluxe are very useful, e.g. to remove clicks and crackle.

That's interesting because that was one of the questions I wanted to ask. A long time ago I bought a pre-amp to use in the LP convert process but never got around to it. Now I'm worried about all these incompatibility problems so I'm going to mull it over for while til I finish a few DVD projects on old family VHS stuff which I have managed to import (using Movie Maker because my device is not supported by this software). Anyway - thanks for the tip because I'm going to get back to that eventually.

From what you have said so far, I think you are into a hornets nest of different programs installed, what to do next, and are in over your head.

Is there any chance that you can get a friend/co-worker/neighbour/relative (with some computer knowlegde) that can come over and help you out.

You need somebody to sit down with you and try to figure out what the heck you have installed or not installed.

To try and answer all the questions you have asked and sort out what you have got installed is impossible in this type of forum.

Maybe another fellow user will come on and have some other ideas.

Unfortately, of all my friends (who are mainly actors) and family (who are mainly lawyers) - I am the only techie. I am going to buy the final upgrade & save ithe setup file OR see if I can get a CD, do a docs & settings backup, keeping all my downloaded exe setup files, and go from there to my paid experts online helpers (no choice)...awaiting higher knowledge (and Roxio).

I don't think installing ANOTHER program is going solve your problem....good luck.

If I was you, I would probably expand my circle of friend's to include a person who has some computer knowledge.

Maybe someone will be interested to know that stuff is working fine now without my consulting any computer illuminati. I uninstalled all the Cannon fodder, played around with folders on my E: drive, deleted projects associated with old My DVD versions, ascertained that all my valuable avi, mpeg, and moviemaker files were intact and healthy, discovered there is some kind of bug in the Home part of this batch of programs, ignored that and used the individual applications which are just peachy, found that Media Manager is working just as it should after some folder reorganization, discovered that if I stick my cameras in the correct orifices I can upload with no problems, and am left with 2 questions: What is the relationship between Sonic and Roxio? and Should I spend another $50 on EMC 9 especially since all the individual apps I have (My DVD, VideWave etc) under a different name (Roxio My DVD 9 Stiudio Premier) are labeled 'Version 9.xx"? Those strike me more as philosophical/marketing questions rather than technical questions, but ...I await with genuine interest the Answers from my betters.
