Sudden slow down

gmkbdl

Question

Have been working on a picture project in videowave - not very large, nothing unusual. Worked great a couple days ago, now so slow I cannot do any editing. Don't have any other projects on computer, have plenty of free space, did a disc clean and disc defrag. Everything else on computer is fine, except EMC8. Didn't change anything, just all of a sudden it is at a snail's pace. Is there something in the program I can check? Maybe a damaged file? Thanks again. MK

After, being on line with Sony for two days, I decided that was enough. Nothing worked. My computer is still on Warranty, so that is good news. Could someone tell me, how to copy my production properly and save a copy? I don't want to mess that up. Thank you for all you support and help, I couldn't do this without you. MK

Unfortunately there is no easy way to copy the project once you are in the middle of one. For that reason, many people put a copy of all images/music, etc into one folder. If they need to be copied, all you would have to do is copy the one folder and then restore it as necessary.

The issue is that the project files are road maps to images (in your case) on your computer. The road maps point to the folders where the images are stored so if your file structure is not exactly the same then the program has to find where they are. For example if your images are stored on your "c:" drive they may be in a folder like My Documents, then My Pictures then for example Last summer, and/or Last Fall and/or etc. When you copy the images, they will be on another hard drive (for example) or a CD or DVD. The file structure will not be the same so you would have to point out where each image/music file, etc is located.

You may want to invest in an external USB hard drive to back up your computer. You could also back up to discs but that could be a lot of discs. There are a lot of back up programs out there. If you have EMC 8, then you have Back up My PC (BUMP). Acronis True Image is another one that a lot of people use. These programs make an exact duplicate (image) of your hard drive so in case anything happens, you can restore that image with all the file structure. Periodic back-up are made depending on your computer use. - Weekly/Every two weeks or more frequently.

The files that go along with a VideoWave production are of course, the dmsm file and a DAT file. I don't know what is in the DAT file.

Open Windows Task Manager, go to processes. Keep it visible while you are doing some editing. What process is using all your CPU time?

It could be a Media Manager Services process or sometimes it is a anti-virus running wild while you are doing the editing.

Is this when the computer is slowing down and you are doing editing?

Interesting, if that is true then nothing else is using CPU time so your computer should not be slowing down unless you have little disk space and it is fragmented.

Have you cleaned up your drive lately especially clearing the temp and tmp files? You did check for malware, didn't you? Do you have your anti virus running when you are doing editing? Best practices is to disconnect from the internet and shut down anti-virus and anti-malware.

When your computer slows down, go to the top menu menu and select tools and then options. Clear the proxy files and save the project. Reopen it and see if you still have that problem. When you are editing in VideoWave, save often under two different file names alternating them. Clear the proxy files whenever you have done a lot of editing. What's "a lot"? Don't know but since clearing the proxy files takes a couple of seconds, so do it periodically.

Before I start any project, I do a disc clean and defrag. I did this about 2 days ago when I noticed the slow down. I always disconnect from internet, but never had to turn off anti-virus before, but will do that. I have no idea what mal-ware is or what it does. If you could guide me, I would be very appreciative. I do clear the proxy files quite often and just did that again today - still takes forever - can't seem to do anything in videowave. Please don't give up on me, I'm willing to try anything. MK

Malware is garbage that shows up on your computer and can slow it down or worse. There are many free anti-malware programs. Download and run them. Microsoft has (had) Windows Defender, AVG has Anti spyware, Ad-Aware 2007, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and others. You'll need to run at least three different ones and don't be surprised if you find hundreds of incidents. Google for free downloads; you find some. Perhaps others will off the ones they like the most.

I am definitely going to do as you suggest with the Malware. I also took you advice about saving my video under a new name and that seems to have solved the problem. I can now do my editing and it is doing it at the speed it always had. I do not have any idea why all of a sudden it slowed down so much, and I didn't realize by saving it as a new file that would solve the problem. Thank you again for all your time and effort and keeping all your suggestions. MK

Thank you for replying. I did as you suggested and these are the ones that seemed large to me: vcgproxyfileman, 13,960K: videowave8.exe, 100,140K; svchost.exe, 26,223K and of course explorer.exe 22,200K.

I am sorry to seem to stupid, but none of this makes sense to me, and not exactly sure what to look for. This just seems to be affecting Roxio, as all else works fine. I did clear the proxy file while I was in videowave, but no faster. Thanks again. MK

That's memory usage. In the column marked CPU, what is well above zero after the program starts and you start editing?

I'm back. I had to "save as" 5 different times. Sometimes I could edit without problems, then the next time it was down to a crawl. I finally gave up and will try again later. But in the meantime, I tried to play a DVD in Windows Media Player that I had burned awhile back. When the screen for the Media Player came up it said "Error performing inpage operation". Since I have absolutely no idea what that means, I am wondering if this could have anything to do with my videowave slowing down. I am just lost and frustrated. MK

Check for malware now ! :angry2: Not later. Post back after you have cleaned your computer.

Windows Defender

Ad Aware Free

Spy-bot Search and Destroy

Others (use free ones rather than pay unless it is part of your anti-virus program.

Update - I spent ALL DAY yesterday trying to fix the problem. I downloaded more anti-virus programs, ran two programs and both came up OK. I must tell you, I am not a big internet user. Never open EMail I don't recognize. Don't download, and only use internet a few minutes at a time. That said, I can't get Windows Easy Media to play DVDs, but will play CDs. Says "Error performing inpage operation". Tried to restore back a week, wouldn't allow me to do it. SOOOO, I was in touch for a very long time with Sony via chat live. Did what they suggested (HMMMMM), but nothing different. I finally finished my production in videowave, tried to burn, but about 3/4 thru encoding, it stopped. Tried to render to see if it was the video, but that too slowed to a crawl about half way thru. Would like to get this off my computer so I can burn at a later date. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated. About in tears. MK

I googled for that error and found a lot of hits. Several have suggested that it may be a disc drive/controller problem which seems more logical. Get back to Sony.

There may also be a hard drive problem where storing the files makes it difficult for the program. Have you run a disc clean up lately? How much free space do you have on your hard drive? When did you defragment the drive last?

If you couldn't restore, you may have a lot more problems with that computer than just with Roxio products. If you have multiple hardware issues, it will be almost impossible to diagnose. Is the computer still under warrantee?

BTW, those are NOT antivirus programs; they hunt for malware. I'm surprised that you did not find any even with your minimal internet use. Did you use the ones I suggested?

You are the best - just for responding to my troubles. Thanks for googling, have not had very much experience with that. Have run a disc clean and defrag. When I go to Disc defrag, it says I have 69% free space (not sure if that is what you need). I did use the programs you suggested to download. And finally, I do think there is alot more wrong and have no idea what happened as I haven't changed anything. Will continue to work with Sony, will let you know what happens. Thanks for all your help, you have helped alot. MK

The reported free space in defrag is what it says - the amopunt of free space.

However, what it's not is how much of the 'used' space is fragmented.

What happens with Windows is that, as files are deleted (temp, old e-mails, etc) space becomes available. Windows then, when it starts to write a file to the drive, starts at the first available space, then moves to the next and so on. In the end your file is scattered all round the hard drive like confetti.

Running defrag tries to move the scattered bits into one contiguous file so, when you go to access it, it reads straight through and the disk heads don't have to play leapfrog all over the platters.

Hope that explains it

Yes, that helps. Hate to sound like a dummy, how do I find out how much free space I actually have? Also, going to back up my video project. Which is best way to do that, thru Roxio Media Manager? They are listed under "my documents" also, can I just copy and paste? I have backed up the pictures and music, but want to make sure I do this right when I copy the production. You are all so helpful. MK

Thanks again. Under CPU the one that says System Idle Process is running at 99. This is such a learning process for me and I am so grateful to you. If this is my problem, what can I do? Thanks. MK
