If I record over 80 minutes on hard drive, Burn to CD will not activate

mike5163

Question

I am using RecordNow 9. and have finally achieved smooth flawless recordings, BUT NOW READ ON:

Books on tape (cassettes) usually play for about 96 minutes. If I record the whole cassette, 96 min. to the hard drive the burn to CD will not activate and I will get a message that says something like " You must save the data to the hard drive." I did save it! I thought! Then i found out if I erase the last 16 min., the burn to CD will activate.

This makes recording BOOK cassettes VERY VERY TEDIOUS. One has to be at the ready to shut off the cassette before it runs over the 80 min mark. I tried setting the record time for 80 min but it didn't work.

Can I use CDs that record longer than 80 min.

Now I know why the Industry made CDs to hold ONLY 80 minutes. What a rip............mike5163 :angry2:

How about this... record the whole 96 minutes, then use something like the GoldWave audio editor to speed up playback by 20%, now you can also lower the pitch by 20%, so it's back at the original pitch, and it'll fit on an 80 minute CD! You can enjoy your book in less time too! (I'm only being half facetious here, by the way.) As for overburning to a 90 minute disc, I'm not sure if EMC 9 supports it, and your drive would have to support it as well.

Actually, the length of CD-R discs according the Red-Book specifications were originally set at 63 - 80 minutes, with the "nominal" length being 74 minutes. This was based on the diameter of the disc, size of the "pits" and the width of the pregroove spiral, which was based on the wavelength of the red laser being used. Early CD-Rs were indeed only 63 minutes long, and quickly went to 74 minutes. (If I could still get those, I'd use them.) Of course, folks wanted to stuff as much on the discs as possible, so the pregroove was squashed to the limit, and now all you can get are 80 minute discs. As for the conspiracy of the recording industry trying to keep you from putting a 90 minute tape onto a CD... I don't buy it. Most LP's were only about 45-50 minutes long anyway and easily fit on a 74 minute CD.

I'm afraid the only real workround on that is for the recipient to have a CD player that will also play mp3 files.

You convert the tape audio to mp3 and record that as data - then play it back in a mp3 capable player and you will get a LOT longer than 96 minutes playback, but it will require the proper player

A rip? Let's take a look here. My CD will burn 80 minutes of data. My tapes are 96 minutes long. I can't get the 96 minutes on an 80 minute CD unless I erase the last 16 minutes. Wait, that means I can only get 80 minutes on an 80 minute CD. WHAT A RIP!

I love it when there is a full moon. ;)
