Cannot extract main feature

steedyweedy

Question

I have several DVD-R compilations of films recorded off the TV, but when I try to save a disc image of just the main feature - to make a back up DVD-R - Toast creates a blank file. I can only image the full DVD. If I use Toast 7.1.2 main-feature-only extraction works perfectly but not with Toast 8.0.1. Any tips please?

I just used the Custom setting (instead of main movie) to select the title I wanted and Toast created the disc image without any problem.

But I don't think this is the best approach to saving videos you want to the hard drive. A disc image is nice to have when you need a menu to select which of several titles to play. But that's not the case here. Instead I'd use Toast to extract the MPEG file of the video title(s) I want. When I want to play one of those MPEGs I'd use VLC Media Player.

Here's how to do this: Insert the DVD-R, set Toast to DVD video and choose DVD with the Media Browser. Double-click on the file that appears in the browser window to see all the titles on the disc. Select the one(s) you want and add them to the Video window. Toast extracts the MPEGs and writes them to the Roxio Converted Items folder. When it's done, go to that folder, rename the files so you know what they are and drag them somewhere else. By default Toast empties that folder when quitting although I've changed that default in Toast preferences.

This is much faster plus you now have MPEGs that can be used in authoring new DVDs at some time along with other MPEGs.
