Question

Using Canon HV20 HDV camcorder capturing video as DV-AVI. When I look at the preview monitor, the video is distorted in that everyone and everything looks very long. How do I correct? I suspect it has something to do with my set up.

Thanks.

I am new to the DV editing world. I have a Canon DC40 and my videos are captured in 16:9 widescreen format on my Canon DVD recorder. When imported via Roxio Media Import (from my Roxio MyDVD 9 Studio Premier suite) my video are vertically squashed because the video is converted into standard 4:3 format.

What must I do to import my 16:9 videos that are on my mini DVD.

Help Please.

Richard

I have a similar problem when I convert content recorded on my Liteon DVD/HDD recorder. The recorder is set to 16:9 as is the source material. But the resulting conversion comes out "squashed",though it doesn't look like 4:3 (somewhat narrower).

At first, my solution was to re encode with DivX converter, but Divx would not do it reporting that the DivX codec was not present in the file. Thanks to the fine solution by M Tolman this problem was solved.Having solved that (may your god bless you M Tolman),I could now re encode with DivX reset the resolution and voila! a full picture.

I only purchased EMC9 because it claimed to convert to DivX and Nero wouldn't even now the thumbnail generated for the file shows it as AVI not DivX.So is it truly a DivX file.I'm confused

Other Canon users have posted problems with this same camcorder. The symptom you are describing sounds like a problem with the widescreen 'flag'. Are you recording in standard definition and then using Media Import to capture to DV AVI? DO NOT CAPTURE TO MPEG 2!!!!! There is a know issue.

Are you recording in HDV? Media Import does NOT support capturing in HDV because it uses a totally different codec. Are you using other software to capture to HDV?

You couldn't have used EMC 9 as it does NOT support HDV or AVCHD capture at all. The only way you can be using EMC 9 to capture from that camcorder is if you are recording at SD. In that case, Media Import will 'see' the Canon like any other miniDV camcorder and save to DV AVI file.

I am recording in HDV and outputting as DV-AVI in wide screen format which as worked in the past.
Again EMC 9 does not support this so I'm not sure what you are actually doing.

I can only tell you that the symptom you describe is indicative that the software is not properly recognize it as 16:9. There is only one way in Media Import 9 where this will happen by capturing via firewire to MPEG 2.

You are correct! I captured in HDV, outputted in SD. I am capturing via firewire.

Ah... I know there are a few HDV camcorders that will do that. If you are capturing as DV AVI and not MPEG 2, I see no reason why that shouldn't work. The newer HDV and AVCHD camcorders really aren't supported very well in most software yet.
