Dvd Decoder - What Is It, Why Do I Need It And Where Do I Get It?

roxio4me

Question

I installed Creator 7 on XP Windows Pro and it wasn't able to play a DVD movie. The error was "no dvd decoder installed".

The DVD device is AOPEN COM5232 / AAH PRO and although not listed, seems to be same as generic devices listed.

I searched SONIC and ROXIO websites and found a product I must purchase but seems to be in addition to Creator7. Does the upgrade to Creator 8 include the DVD Decoder software? Links via Windows XP online Help Topics pointed to other companies and products, again software similar to Creator 7 that must be purchased. SONIC or ROXIO were not on this list, neither was AOPEN.

Why is this not included? I don't want other products installed. Thanks for any help and suggestions.

The dvd decoder should have come with your software that came with your burner. If your burner came with PowerDVD than install it and it will include the decoder. Even Windows Media Player won't play a dvd without a decoder installed.

I just spoke with a customer service rep and was told Creator 8 has a DVD decoder - my AOPEN did not, and I am unable to download or find one on the AOPEN website, so I am stuck. Can someone with Creator 8 please confirm the codec is included, before I upgrade and get find out it's not included? Thanks.

Yeah, it's Cineplayer. You can buy the decoder for $15 online.

DVD Decoder

I think ATI use to have a free one available but am not sure so do a google for 'free dvd decoder' and see what comes up.

Found out Creator 8 is what I need...thanks.

If all you want to do is play DVD movies then getting EMC 8 or even emc 7.5 is overkill. These programs are designed for capturing/editing/burning audio and video. Playing a DVD movies is just a "sideline". I would just get Cineplayer by itself if you are not interested in any video work.

If you've got EMC7 on your computer, you also have Roxio Player which will play DVDs. Plus you've probably got a program that came with your computer or DVD drive like Cyberlinks PowerDVD.
