I Think I Hate Roxio

Goldfinger7967

Question

My old Nero 6 used to work great, then I buy a new computer with Vista and Roxio on it and I can't burn a #$^@ thing. Actually that's not quite true. Roxio might work just fine, then all of a sudden it will stop recognizing the media. It will get hung up on telling me to insert a blank dvd, when in fact the dvd is blank. I might insert 10 dvds and it will still tell me to insert a blank one. Then it freezes up.

My Burner is branded by "LG" and it is the following: HL-DT-STDVDRAM GSA-E30L USB DEVICE

Any ideas, suggestions, cell number of a helpful voodoo priest, or any thing else would be appreciated.

That really sounds like a media issue to me. I would try a different brand of recordable discs.

Wow--a company man to the end. I used Magic DVD Copier and both it and my recorder made a perfect disc. No hiccups. I tried Roxio again, but with Verbatim blanks instead of Memorex, and again Roxio tells me there is only 2.6 G of space available on this blank disc. Hmm, same thing it said about the Memorex. Strange huh? Tell you what I think "John at Roxio", I think I'd bet your 401k at Sonic Solutions that it's a software issue, namely this pos called Easy Creator 9. What kind of kickback did Microsoft get from Roxio in return for certifying this crap?

Perhaps if you engaged your bran instead of shooting off your mouth you'd spot that when you click on 'burn' you get an icon appearing showing the amount of free space REMAINING

That is - what you have left AFTER you make the DVD

When I fire up Roxio and click on "Disc Information" it tells me that the dvd in the LG writer is blank. It has 4,482.6 MB of free space and there is 0.0 MB of used space. Then when I click on "Burn Image", the icon at the bottom left of Roxio immediately changes it's tune and states that there is now only 2.1 GB free and to insert a blank disc. Funny thing is that all of the blank discs read that there is only 2.1 GB of free space on all of them. My writer's drivers are up to date and there is no firmware update available.

This is an external drive then, since it's showing up as a USB device? If so, is it the same drive you used with your old machine?

In a case like this, it's your drive that's telling Easy Media Creator what it is or isn't seeing/recognizing. EMC is only telling you what the drive is telling it. The first thing would be to try a couple different brands of blank discs to see if your drive likes them any better. Actually, that's the second thing, the first is to check for any updated firmware for your drive. Check the drive manufacturer's web-site. That may solve your problem outright.

So, give that a try and let us know if there's any change.

Open DVDInfo Pro and check drive and media info from the icons at top, DVDInfo Pro is found in EMC 9 tools. If this program sees the drive and the media, post the MID Media ID from a blank DVD disc like below, from DVDInfo Pro (click the clipboard icon then right click paste).

The Media code/Manufacturer ID MCC 004, tells us it's a Verbatim +R 16x single layer DVD.
