Photo in Videowave Help

Roxann (sis)

Question

:( Using EMC9, Which I really like!!

I have some 1920 photos, bringing them into video wave for a production. I don't like the black space at the sides and/or underneath. I can't resize the photo or the people are out of proportion. I've tried colored screeen inserts and overlayed the photo & it looks like a photo on a piece of paper...not good. I've tried background photos with the pic as an overlay & same pic pasted effect. I've tried clip art through Photosuite and it wants the same size as pic & background hasn't worked for me through Photosuite either.

If I use 'fill' in videowave, the people's faces disappear on some of the pics, so I need to keep it in 'bars'.

What can I do and where do I do it through? Thank you so very much.

Karri,

I think that the same thing can be more easily achieved in most cases (unless your selection is off centre or you want to focus on a smaller part of the picture inside the black borders) by using right click on the panel, click aspect ratio handling, select fill frame, click OK. In previous posts in this thread I was concerned with the case where no cropping is desired, when one has to replace any black borders with something nicer.

ohh ok then, good enough ... I must have missed that completely, I was sleepy when I read through it tho, so my mistake :)

A nice replacement for the back borders then might be some of the nice textured papers you can make/download. Like antique-y papers for old photos for example; so many others to choose from. Use one maybe that complements the production theme, as a replacement for the black or colored backgrounds. Might be nice too :)

Thanks for your reply,

Frank, sorry, pls disregard :)

Hi, Roxann

You have already tried most of what I (and probably other users) would suggest. One more thing to try. Open your project in Videowave, click File>Production Settings... There you should see an area for Background Fill with selections for a Solid Color, Gradient, and Image. The solid color option will probably give you about the same as the color panel/picture on the overlay track that you already tried. But the Gradient may work for you if you experiment with the color combinations. Also, using this setting will apply to all pictures in the project.

I would suggest using a small utility call Image Cropper to put a colored border around the photos, but that will give you the same look as the "color panel/picture on overlay track" that you already said you do not like.

Maybe someone will jump in with a better suggestion.

Good Luck :)

Hi,

Have you tried using Pan and Zoom to crop out the black space? I recently made a DVD with some old photographs and newspaper clips dating from about 1910. I cleaned them up in Photoshop Elements and then added them in VideoWave. I applied P&Z and they came out great on the DVD, both on the computer screen as well as the tv screen. P&Z will crop out some of the photo, but it did not distort the photos at all. (And if you want all of the image in, you can use the P&Z to pan across and around the photo to get it all in.)

Another possibility which I don't think you've mentioned is to add border (edge) or frame to a picture in Photosuite. That gives additional styles and options to try out without cropping or distorting the photo.

The principle is to make the photo with added borders or frame have the same aspect ratio (in pixels) as the video production (either 4:3 or 16:9). Then Videowave will adjust the size of the picture to fit the preview screen without the black blocks left/right or top/bottom.

For that purpose you would start with a new canvas that has the right aspect ratio for your Videowave production and whose dimensions in pixels are larger than the photo. Insert the photo into that canvas, if necessary adjust its size in pixels to be the same as the original. Then under enhanced add edge, select an edge style, choose colour, width, etc, select maintain aspect ratio or surround my photo, double click on the edge to insert; save as a .jpg file. Or you could try frame (choose one with the right ratio), though as far as I can make out the frame options are less flexible than edge (for example fixed width, so the size of the picture is changed to fit the frame rather than the other way round; however I haven't tried much, so may have missed something).

If you want the whole of the original photo to fit into the TV safe zone, then make the canvas bid enough so that the bits outside the TV safe zone is filled with the border or frame.

Alternatively, Borders and frames with more adjustable parameters (width, colour, texture, gradients, etc,) are available in more advanced graphics software, such as Paintshop Pro or Photoshop.

Whatever you do it will look better with photos that are wider than they are high, because landscape is the format for video (the shape ofPC and TV screens).

PS Thought I'd show some examples.

Pic 1 is the original photo: notice black top and bottom in Videowave, because the photo's aspect ratio is not 4:3 but about 1.5.

Pic 2 is an example of adding edge on a canvas with 4:3 aspect ratio

Pic 3 show added frame that has 4:3 aspect ratio.

Hi Roxann:

A long time ago while making a videowave production, I had numerous jpg's that when inserted into the slides, where there were black borders either on the sides or top and bottom. I had the same problem as you in trying to get rid of the borders and what I finally did was print the photos, then re-scan it by placing some material shields all around the print except for the picture itself. Then used that as my jpg for Videowave.

It worked for most all of them but in a few cases it still didn't work. So eventually I gave up and did what Jean suggested by placing a frame around the jpg's. At least that looked better than the old black border.

This thread topic has come up several times before and it's been some time since I have heard any more posts about it. This is a real bad one to fix that's for sure. There are as suggested a bunch of work arounds depending on just what you think would look good.

Hi I'll just delete this so as not to confuse anyone and can follow jeanrosenfeld advice to use the fill frame option in aspect ratio handing. I found it cut off a lot of the image that's why I did the P&Z workaround. Sorry again to have caused any confusion. Many thx for understanding :)
