I have just about had it with Roxio 9

Rayi

Question

I have just about had it with Roxio 9. I even bought a new video card (previously had an ATI 128mb video card) and I just did a complete clean reinstall when I installed the new EVGA 7600 agp 256mb video card I just got, installing the latest drivers. I completely enjoyed Roxio 7.5 and continue to use Roxio 7.5 because Roxio 9 just does not consistently work with my computer. I get error messages like "Runtime Errror! R6025-pure virutal fucntion call"; Roxio MyDVD suddenly quits. For some odd reason, with certain music videos, I get some kind of distortion, like the speaker is ripped; sometimes I cannot burn my project to iso. And the constant freezing of Roxio MyDVD reminds me of the time I had a Mac. None of this occurrs when I use the same exact video files in Roxio 7.5. Not to mention that I use Roxio 7.5 flawlessly in a less capable machine: AMD 1900 palomino with only 266mhz bus and a 64 mb Video card. Unfortunately, Roxio 7.5 is lacking in features that Roxio 9 has.

I was wondering how stable Roxio 8 is? and whether it has some of the features I like: fit to disc and easier creation of Chapters. Although, I have heard complaints about Roxio 8, as well. But I discovered that it is risky uninstalling Roxio 9, as it is a monster that can wreck your system and leave you without a CD/DVD driver. I doubt that they will make an update. It's amazing to make a product like this. They will probably just come out with version 11 that is even more taxing to your computer. But I imagine it must work ok in other computers; just not mine.

To be fair, I discovered that I had a corrupted 3rd Hard Drive which was causing my excessive freezing and difficulty burning my project to iso. I also don't know yet if the corruption related to my IDE PCI controller card. I was wondering because Roxio 9 initially seemed better in some respects after I added the new Video card. It rendered the video file faster for one thing. It was just that it only added to my frustration with Roxio 9.

One way to check out the controller is to move the suspect drive to the other controller (ie, if it's secondary master, set it to primary slave) and see how it behaves there

You may need to do a full reformat (it's possible the MBR and/or partition table got corrupted). I've seen drives go like that for no real reason and in one case, it worked and was accessible in Linux but not in windows (it wouldn't even let me boot windows if it was installed, but it would let Linux boot up). A full low level Linux format and another reformat to NTFS cured it (and don't ask me why or how - it just did) ;)

One of the things that annoys me about this Silicon Image controller IDE card(SIL680) is that it loses the hard drive every now and then. I have to shut down the computer and pull the cable out and put it back in and reboot. I have it on another hard drive and works fine, except that it still will not boot and show up in my computer when I start up sometimes. I am thinking of buying another control card but difficult to decide on what to get. The other drive continues to cause problems no matter where I put it so I will have to reformat it.

Looking at all of your past posts, maybe you should build a new computer. Yours seems to be quite troublesome.

Yes I agree. It seems it is showing it's age. I have been thinking of it, especially looking at what others have. I have already purchased a case. Picking out the motherboard is the hardest part. Nonetheless, Roxio 9 does seem to have some odd quirks about it that doesn't seem to occur in Roxio 7.5. But overall, Roxio 9 is better and easier to use. I just over reacted when I had all the freezing problems. But I am sure when version 10 comes around, I will probably need something better.

That is NOT a Roxio problem, but a common Windows XP problem when removing ANY Cd or DVd burning application. Not just Roxio product.

I had heard about it being a WinXP problem but I have uninstalled various Nero versions and previous Roxio versions quit a bit over the years with WinXP and have never lost a DVD/CD driver before. It's just that I can't seem to get Roxio 9 to work right. So it's just one more thing that has happened using it.
